Favorite ski mountains in each area

Post by joeatomictoad » Sat Aug 08, 2020 10:31 pm

Some of my favorites below.
1. New England favorite = Mad River Glen, ski it if you can
2. Utah favorite = Little Cottonwood Canyon, take your pick (Alta / Snowbird), can't go wrong
3. Colorado favorite = Arapahoe Basin, goat statue at the base area
4. Lake Tahoe favorite = Homewood, rainbows sighted regularly

What are yours?

Feeling antsy? Ready for snow?

New England: Whaleback, Northeast Slopes, Bolton, and Burke Mtn

And that's it for me. I spent time out west but need to explore more before I start naming names. Especially the smaller gnarly grizzled mountains that need more play (there is def a theme with my New England picks).

That's an easy one. In Alaska it's the Chugach, Kenai, and Talkeetna mountains. Back East it's the Pocono Mts, not much snow but it's where I can go right out my door. For road trips back there it would be the Whites, Greens, and the High Peaks of the Adirondacks.

Whaleback is open again? I cannot keep track. It has been years since I was "in the know".

It's the only way I can survive Houston summers. Going to an ice skating rink helps, too!!!

Good thing is that the same skill needed to carve skates can be transferred to carving skis and visa versa. I went to a skate rink a couple years ago and thought my rental skates had dull blades, but when I flexed my ankles and drove my knees forward like when skiing they carved fine. What I had learned skiing over the last 25 years since the last time I skated made me a better skater, even though I hadn't done it in 25 years and was a lot older.

northeast - Saddleback is my fave, there's also a "top-tier" of 6 for me, Saddleback, Sugarloaf, Jay, Stowe, and Smuggs are in the elite club of heavy snowfall & big mountain and Whiteface gets in for big mountain.

intermountain west - Jackson Hole, A-Basin. Alta & Snowbird. The places I haven't skiied that would still be on the list? Crystal Mountain in Wash. Silverton. Mammoth. Maybe Taos? Big Sky.

Midwest - Mt. Bohemia
West - Cooke City
That's all I've skied - Midwest and West - I'd like to try the East sometime.

Can anyone make any recommendations about visiting the Pyrenees for resort / backcountry skiing? I know nothing more than the general area on a map. Seems like they have a strong culture of telemark skiing there.
