I saw it live, I was interested, I’ve been hooked since. What really got me was watching them make Telemark turns down the ski jump.... or maybe the reindeer drawn sleighs

In addition to the comments above, the telemark stance gives one front to rear stability when using skis without attached heels. So yes for XC skiing off track it is very handy to reduce the frequrency of falls on one's face.
