So, if you're having ankle rubbing problems with the new boots, and had a somewhat similar problem with your old boots, you might be rolling your ankles inward, at least partially causing some of the rubbing. You sound like a good candidate for custom footbeds to level out your feet in the boots...for a more neutral foot position.
It's cheap to replace laces with some that will hold knots. Or, use none at all.
