Re: Circumnavigating Crater Lake March 10th-12th, 2020 on Altai Hok Skis and Pulk Sled
I’m aiming to do this same trip with family on March 26-27-28, 2024, depending on the weather. Resurrecting this trip report to ask a few questions of freeheelfreemind and anyone else who’s gone around Crater Lake on skis. First the tele questions: I got some great beta from owtdoorzy on the r/Backc...

Re: S-bound 98 and Nansen vs. Rabb 68
This will put a lot of pressure on the 3pin bill of the Alaska 75 though- you may end up with boot failure... Personally, I think that the Alaska BC is a superb boot for the S-Bound 98- for what this ski is truly tuned for (eg "low to mid-angle slopes")… Great advice, thank you Gareth. It makes me ...

Re: S-bound 98 and Nansen vs. Rabb 68
Versus my 180 Rabb 68- the 179 S98: - has less rocker in the shovel; - has an essentially flat tail with no taper; - has a higher intial camber - has a similar moderately-stiff round flex (the Rabb has a smoother flex) The S98 has a significantly longer effective edge and much wider turn radius tha...

Re: Which ski for steep downhill narrow trails with a 50 lbm backpack
See the thread on Hoks in the Whites. I tried Hoks recently and those plus a long pole might really be your ticket. I did not find them too clunky to enjoy on trail and could definitely see them solving your challenge. I used Oboz winter boots but you could mount them with 3-pins. https://www.telema...

Skiing White Grass tomorrow
White Grass WV just got 8” and Chip Chase has declared a Purple Powder Alert. I’ll be there tomorrow, who’s with me? P.S. Gear report: Thanks to obsessively haunting this board during the pandemic :D and lots of good advice that you regulars gave me, I alternate at White Grass between Åsnes Ingstad ...

Re: Ski Backpack
I’m a fan of the Black Diamond lineup because they are light, tough, have a streamlined profile, and have dedicated ski touring options. I have the ski touring Cirque in both the 30L for backcountry day tours when I need all 10 essentials (https://www.mountaineers.org/blog/what-are-the-ten-essential...

Re: Older Alpina Discovery Ski size chart
I own the predecessor to the Alpina Discovery, namely an Alpina Cross-Terrain which has the identical dimensions as the Discovery 102 (102-64-87). I am 167 pounds, 5'10", and ski the 180 cm. EDIT: Sorry, moving too fast there. My skis are comparable to the Discovery 102, and I have found them to be ...

Re: What do you carry in day packs? Backcountry XCd
Great lists. Last year I got a Garmin InReach Mini for backpacking on the John Muir Trail. Now I carry it on any trip where I might lose cell service which is to say most of them. It's 3.5 oz, allows SOS wherever you are, you can text back and forth with SAR team in that case, and it pairs with a ph...

Re: Asnes Tindan 86 Ski Review
Okay, now my question for you. If you’re in DC, why go to Bohemia which is really cool, when Vermont and New Hampshire offer more in terms of terrain and in micro-climes more snow??? Just curious, the drive for me to Bohemia and Vermont is comparable. The difference is I know a lot of places on the...
