Ski for Light

Post by satsuma » Sat Sep 23, 2017 9:17 am

This post is mostly for competent xc skiers that have a week to spend at an event and money tp get there and for the cost of the event itself. I went last year, it is a lot of fun if you are in the right spiritregardless of whether the skiing is challenging/

A short summary of the event is that sighted xc skiers guide visually or mobility-challenging skiers in classical cross country skiing in tracks-- 5 or 10 km except for new skiers. The main event, the international Ski for LIght event, includes about 250 skiers and guides, with about 200 people from the US and about 50 from other countries (primarily European). It is a good opportunity to meet people from other countries. It will be held this year in Reno NV (hotel)/ skiing at Tahoe-Donner Truckee, CA.

The event this year is January 21-28, but applications should be in soon and are generally due by the end of October.

There may be an opportunity to assist in this event for shorter periods for those in the local area.

More information is at http://www.sfl.org

There are also some local versions of this event which of course are less expensive and typically shorter. The ones I remember are in Methow Valley, WA, Montana (West Yellowstone), Canada (at Silver Star, BC this year0, Colorado, and Lake Tahoe. These are referenced on the above website as well, or by searching on "ski for light" on Facebook.
