Sandwich Notch Rd end-to-end from the north

Post by Woodserson » Fri Feb 01, 2019 9:43 pm

About 8 miles or so, 9 with our detour to a lake, through a wild notch on a non-winter-maintained road in the White Mountain Nat'l Forest/Sandwich Range in NH. North to south consists of a 500' climb to height of land and then a 900' descent to the car on the south side over the 8 miles. Not super long, but very quiet and beautiful. We had perfect conditions, 6" of dry fluff on edgeable base.

We start. Two days after a snow and still no travelers! It is usually frequented by snowmobiles... afraid of a little cold?

Height of land, 1776 feet. This sign is mentioned in all the old nordic tour guidebooks from the 70's and early 80's

Heading down during the Blue Hour, snowmobile tracks now on the south side, fast descent!

Driving back to the car on the north side, we now see the other side Black Mountain and Sandwich Dome turn pink with the alpenglow

looks beautiful, it's the like the gateway to the White mtns. So it's basically a gradual uphill for 4 miles and then downhill 4 miles on the other side. looks like a great place to drop a car on the other side.

Thats cool, that was a major road at one point in time. Sandwich is a beautiful area, I work down there sometimes, classic New England frozen in time.

That sounds like typical tours that I do. Mine will have sections that are worthy of doing some laps. That way I can add to the fun and time spent outside. I can stretch a two hour tour into three or more hours without getting further from the trailhead.

Ps: I like your buddy's tracks.

That looks like a fun day trip. I’m gonna check it out, maybe even next weekend. So you spotted two cars or went there and back?
