I odered a pair of the Fischer BCX Grand Tour boots from Steep and Cheap for $137US and a set of the BC Auto bindings for my skinny hand-me-down trail skis. Still much cheaper than Trailhead, even with the currency conversion. I will pick them up in Vermont when visiting family for Easter. I just started this year and am hooked. I have been a snowboarder for years and have accessed the woods on snowshoes a lot, but have always wanted to try xc. My neighbour gave me some old gear, not really suited to BC, but I have been having a blast. Chasing sales now to get ready for next season. This is really the better way of moving through snow. Can't wait to practice the telemark techniques more. Where did you source the skate blades in Canada (or did you have to import from Europe)?
I don't have anybody stateside, and don't cross that border.

As for skates in Canada, found this:

Thank you. That's an awesome resource. Another investment down the line. My wife will just keep shaking her head.

If REI had my size I'd be sore tempted, not that it often gets cold enough: driving distance from Toronto. Besides, my 3-pin skis are laughable for the expedition these demand: ancient Åsnes Tur-Langren woodies, and my old alpine parabolics on Voile Cable Telemark bindings.

Someone in Edmonton is selling some Original Non-3-pin Hardwire bindings for $80 CAD. I don't see these come up too often. I highly recommend these for xcD as when secured with minimal tension they tour well and give good support when turning, and easy in & out. if you don't need the free pivot of the Voile Switchback these are lighter too.

These were mentioned in another thread:

I have no connection with the seller, but these are a really great deal, imho.
Skins like this will fit most metal edge XC skis w/60mm waists, and will work well with wider skis in many situations. Trim to length.
Now $14 and free shipping, how can you go wrong?!

I was at the s&w ski swap in Concord Nh today. They have some deals on used tele bindings, most still attached to skis though. Voile CRB 3pin (maybe) Hardwire $20, Unmounted waxless Fischer OBX 179mm $40. They didn't look like they'd do well under my svelte 200lbs.

They are open 10/16 from noon-3pm.
