The perfect tele binding boot setup.
The perfect tele binding boot setup.
What if you took your favorite duckbill boot, with all of it's duckbill resistance feel, added a duck butt to pull the heel down to the plate, and could use a free pivot optional 22 designs AXL binding. Throw in an AT heel option like the Meidjo and you just might have the perfect skiing telemark binding. IMO of course. Releasability in TM bindings is a joke. None will ever be effectively unless they can mimic the old Voile plates better, meaning at a certain stress level the entire binding pulls from the ski. As my new ACL cadaver donated can attest, even the Freerides won't release effectively in a heel raised position, so why bother?

Agree with "Why bother"....Super Rotta does it well with very little weight and with a free heel...a really free heel....you rarely get acl damage...Believe they have done research at UVM and the empirical evidence was free heel has far less resistance hence less knee damage...TM

The only time I thought about getting releaseable bindings was when I was laid up with my leg in a cast, by the start of the next ski season that idea went out the window.
I do believe that more rigid bindings and fatter skis has led to an increase in knee injuries, but now I am more likely to tweak my knee on light gear.

I think releasables can be effective in certain scenarios; hooking a ski is a prime example. Our heels aren't always raised when we get in a bad fall position.

If it was possible to tear your ACL with free-heel bindings I surely would have done it by now!
I've twisted my legs & skis up like a pretzel too many times to count.
