Bonnas in Old Crow

Post by athabascae » Tue Mar 22, 2016 12:59 am

Here are a couple of photos of my Bonna Conquest skis (e89 class) I took during an early evening ski tonight outside of Old Crow, Yukon - a fly in community in the taiga just above the Arctic Circle.

Old Crow has an interesting history with XC skiing through the celebrated efforts of Father Mouchet. Beginning in the 1950s he inspired local aboriginal people to reconnect with the land through skiing. Remarkably, Old Crow (and Inuvik) has produced Olympic caliber skiers. Information on Father Mouchet and Old Crow XC skiers can be found on he Internet. For his efforts, Father Mouchet was awarded the Order of Canada - Canada's highest civilian honour.

Those Bonnas are amazing Al. Doesn't matter which way they are pointed - they just FLY.

Doing this from my phone. I'll try to fix the photos when I get home later this week....

Man that's quite the place.

Did you fly in? For work?

I looked it up on a map, that's really far north!

It's fly-in only Mike. Here for some committee work with the First Nation.

It is pretty far north and remote and would have been much more so in the 1950s and 1960s when this place was consistently producing top caliber XC skiers. Whitehorse - where I live - produces many national team skiers, and in fact the national championships are being held there this week, but that makes sense because we have all the facilities and support to do so. For such a remote little village as Old Crow to do so in the 1960s is, to me, remarkable.

Yeah I read that and didn't see any roads. Looks like you could take a nice float on the Porcupine River and make it in.

It's nice they let you take your skis!

Yes it would be a great river trip, particularly in the fall when caribou, salmon and grizzly bears are congregated along rhe Porcupine River. I hope to float it one fall...

In the interim, I'll enjoy skiing up or down the river tonight.
