Re: Norwegian welt vs the rubber rand

I fully agree that the wrapping the rubber of the sole up onto the upper gives a theoretical advantage in the transfer of forces from the upper to the sole - all other things being equal. My point is that all other things are generally not equal. If you had the upper of a brand new version of an aso...

Re: Norwegian welt vs the rubber rand

Well, my guess about what would happen in the long run is predicated on having two boots that start out about the same. So my answer is inherent in that. But anther way to look at this is what the future holds - and my guess is the future does not hold much in the way of 75 mm boots, at least Norweg...

Re: Norwegian welt vs the rubber rand

I suspect that in the end, if you had truly comparable boots in both types of construction, and skied them comparably, by the time the norwegian welted boot got as broken down as your are, the glued on sole would fail by cracking behind the pins. Unless those soles have some reinforcement in that ar...

Re: New to Skiing - Northern Canada

Looking at the wayyy old school approach to this, if you check out what the folks in the Siberian backwoods still use to get around in the winter, it is wide and long and often with permanently attached skins. Used basically as a snowshoe, since they are on almost entirely flat terrain. Been working...

Re: Re using smiley plates

many years ago I worked in a shop and I made a router jig for smile plate installations, so they would be easy, quick, and really clean. So we did a fair number. The embedded metal plates were notoriously random as far as their embedment depth, which is one of the reasons why you want the smile plat...

Nice! But the real question is, do you have the Mustang to go with that 289 emblem I see?

Re: Theoretically speaking, what would be your choice of skis?

I will state up front that i do not have experience in the Rockies that is relevant . But i think the larger question before getting to gear is whether there is a long enough period of snow on the ground for this to be possible; and indeed whether all portions of the route actually have snow cover a...

Re: Any good references for running "vintage" skis?

Rossignol randonee - don't do it. I remember selling those in the shop I worked in back in the early 80's. Or trying to sell them. And failing.

Scarpa Aliens, 29.0

Scarpa Aliens, 29.0, good condition. $190 shipped to CONUS. I bought these used but they do not fit me so I never skied them. They come with two sets of liners, one is the original and one is a thinner, more race-type as I understand it. Also they came to me with a spool of Dyneema cord in case you ...

Re: Paging Tom M. With a question

As to skiing with a pack - I would say for most people, skiing without a pack is their usual, and with a pack is another animal. I, on the other hand, have done almost all of my skiing with a pack. So while I am not a good skier by anyone's standards, I am relatively better with a pack than without....
