Re: FTP Gloves and Mittens

I also just picked up a pair of FTP gloves--last season's RX Pro glove. Fit and quality seems very good, and as usual a removable liner is the best way to go. It was $20 US cheaper than the current version, btw. I just need the snow and cold weather, which is sorely lacking in Colorado right now. It...

Re: Talk me Down... or Not!

The only thing is that the duckbill can be a little thin for Voile bindings (fine for Rottefella Super Tele). I guess NN-Nordic Norm only normalized the pins, not the sole thickness. Not exactly true, the two standards for 75mm sole thickness are 8-12mm and 12-20mm. Older traditional 75mm bindings,...

Re: How would you repair a cracked duckbill 50 miles into the wilderness?

To those commenting about cables: I agree, and I share the concern about weight. I’m going to experiment this winter with 3mm Dyneema cord and report back on both stretch and abrasion. One meter of 3mm Dyneema cord weighs 5 grams and is stronger than steel wire. Both the Voile 3pin/cable and the ne...

Re: More traction for waxless skis in less ideal conditions. Kicker skins?

If one avoids a very soft grip wax- then the grip wax does not have to be removed until the base needs a cleaning. I haven't had to clean the bases of my E-99 Crown and E-109 Crown in 3 seasons- they both have Swix Green-Blue ironed into the scales- excellent glide, fantastic grip and no stick- and...

Re: How would you repair a cracked duckbill 50 miles into the wilderness?

Good emergency repair! I once attempted to repair a similar toe break on a tour companion's boot out on a 10th Mtn Div hut trip--2nd full day and his toe snapped--this was a while back, and he was in Asolo Snowfields or Snowpines, can't recall exactly. On examination, his boots were in poor conditio...

Re: Favorite daypack for half-day trips?

I see plenty of backcountry XC skiers with running-type vests and vest/packs these days. I wore a ski patrol vest for 20 years and found it a pretty comfortable way to carry small loads of essentials for a ski tour. I do think you'd be better with a camelback type water arrangement rather than a cou...

Re: Unapologetic love note to the Fischer E99

I've skied on E99's since the late 1970's when the first green E99's with aluminum edges came on the market, which was the upgrade of the earlier Fischer 77, iirc. Back then we were using mushy Alfa touring boots and had no ability to really turn any ski, but the E99s were a start. Since then I've o...

Re: More traction for waxless skis in less ideal conditions. Kicker skins?

So, I would consider the kicker skins only if your tours were mostly uphill one way, stop & shuffle-off-the-skins, then mostly downhill on the return, as you will have too much drag to enjoy a kick-glide tour. I would only use kick wax over the scales in a real emergency; removing kick wax from a wa...

Sept 2020 Lower Price! Alico Double 75mm Size 41 $100 + Shipping

Size 7.5 mens; 9 wm's double leather telemark/backcountry ski boots for those who still prefer the flex and feel of real full grain leather. An inner lace-up boot liner adds warmth and support; the full grain leather outer boot has internal stiffeners, and a forefoot strap for additional support. Us...

Re: In Memoriam -- John Prine

I saw John Prine in concert a couple of times, about 20 years apart. Very worthwhile, as he was a very funny man and wonderful lyricist and musician.
