Spent my day yesterday in Olympic National Park climbing up the Switchback Trail to Klahanie Ridge and skiing the bowl north of the ridge. A little cloudy, but the sun peeked out a few times. It was great getting back out again this season, but I'm whipped from kicking steps up the trail and then again out of the bowl a couple trips! All in all, a great trip for an old guy.
I also baptized my new G3 Infidels for the first time. They did great!
Ominous warning sign about Killer Goats at the trail head. As it was, I didn't see one.
The Mt. Angeles massif from my up-trail
Looking south into the inner Olympics from my up-trail.
My goal, the top of the ridge
This place is a cross roads in the Summer
My new skis and Mt. Angeles
Mt. Angeles from the bottom of the bowl
Looking North. Canada is out there somewhere, eh?
That whole slope has been sliding, so it's only a matter of time before this cornice gives way into the bowl.
My boot track to the left, ski tracks to the right.
Sucking down a Brew Free or Die IPA after my first climb-out.
Self portrait. That's not a carbunkle on my right forehead. Don't know what it was, but it made my wife wonder! Gone now.
Mt. Olympus, Mt. Carrie in there somewhere. Looking south from the down trail back to the car.

Great pictures. Looks like you hit with plenty of snow still in the bowl.
Much snow on the trail on the way up? |

Yep, I hit continuous snow about halfway up, so I was kicking steps for a good portion of the Switchback Trail. I just kept at it but it took me about 2 hours to get to the ridge top! _________________ "That's better than Juicy Fruit with crack rolled up in it." I went up there on June 10th. Lots of snow still in the bowl.
(Climbing out of the upper half)
We also skied the lower portion of the bowl.
(climbing out of the lower half)
We were able to ski to the car, just barely.
Hopefully you found our steps up the south slope and didn't have to kick new ones the whole way. |

I think I may have found your tracks. I was thinking, "man this dude must be tall" because I'm 5'10" and I was having trouble reaching some of the steps! They may have been down tracks from someone else. I veered off the boot track and went up towards the saddle at a point about level with the sign that marks the trail to Hurricane Ridge and Klahanie Ridge/Lake Angeles. It just seemed easier to go straight up at the time, but I probably should have stayed in your boot track.
There must have been some rain since you went up because your ski tracks weren't visible in the bowl. There were some tracks directly under Mt. Angeles though. I did see some down tracks on the south side, but decided not to chance messing up my bases on all that gacked up snow.
All in all, it was a great day up there. _________________ "That's better than Juicy Fruit with crack rolled up in it." (as I said to my ski buddy after a particularly good powder run.) |
