In the 10 years I did avy work I can easily say that teaching kids was the best part:

Government-sponsored I notice (addressing the gov't vs. ski area responsibility question raised up-thread).

Pretty cool that the show went out to McGrath.

Thanks....but all along the way, unpaid, I conducted more courses than the ones listed.

When the Snow Dynamics train would come to town, there was the paid courses- State of Alaska funded- then there was the pro bono courses at the schools.

We owe it to them- people cannot expect people to understand the avalanche phenomenon without professional guidance.

McGrath, Alaska- what a cool place.

Any pros need to donate their time to do this. They owe it to the kids.

It is easier to train them as kids, then to re-train them as adults.

I have done more then my share of teaching kids... Cool

Very cool, and good on ya. Making me wish I was instructor certified.

I worked for BLM for 12 years fighting fires in Alaska. I spent a lot of time in that place that we sometimes called McGoo...not all of it in McGuires or the Roadhouse. Cool

... but, while it would be best to utilize education of skiers and especially youth to raise awareness of the hazards occasionally found at ski areas, such an effort seems unlikely to find traction within an industry that shares more in common with cruise ship and theme park marketing than with classroom education, outdoor/experiential education, or guiding.

Hmmm.... There's something a bit off here. A true "star" wouldn't be making sure to announce it to everyone, repeatedly, seemingly just for the attention.

Seriously - one who does such things, genuinely for the benefit of others, never needs to seek credit. Never asks for attention. Never goes on an internet forum and says anything that could even be misunderstood as bragging. And there is no misunderstanding here.

Yeah, volunteers can get kinda pissy at times. Might have to do with the time they spend in Jr High classrooms(Hell) when they could be getting good vert(Heaven).

Damn, you are sore.

I no longer do avalanche risk control. Haven't in 5 years.

But I still donate time to teach kids. And I don't need credit. Junior Achievement, for example, is a real free enterprise treat for me.

The point was many people do educate kids pro bono. What are you doing, Spidey, to help?

Thought so.

J- those are Cordova kids in that photo...I'm sure you knew that. They were middle schoolers. Some of the most well-behaved, smartest kids I have had the pleasure to meet.

Sadly, it was also the last time I got to work with Mike.

yup, those kids are still stoked!
Ben, leos kid, dropped some serious lines(50-60*/1K) this season for a 16yr old...Hell, for an any-year-old for that matter. They do it safey too. Thanks to you and leo's instruction.

But the more important group you helped were the young-gun snow machiners. A whole bunch of them compared to the earn-your-air/tricks kids.

Naww... no soreness. Was just an observation on the way you come across over the internet. I certainly didn't expect to strike a nerve with db - that was, um, an entertaining response?

... Anyway, if indeed you do possess the humility you sort-of displayed with your answer to me, maybe just take it as constructive criticism on how you present yourself moving forward - you did describe yourself as "professional" multiple times, which seemed more than likely to be just in case anyone didn't hear you the first time. Just because I'm the only one who said anything doesn't mean I'm the only one who read it that way....

edit to add: Yes, of course this stems from the condescending attitude you displayed toward the good people(one of which is a friend of mine), doing good things at Tuckerman Ravine because you don't like their terminology. If this wasn't stacked on top of that, no I probably wouldn't have said a thing - allowing a "benefit of the doubt," if you will, but at some point something needs to be said. Hope you "get" that.
