Best time of the year for me is when the seasons of my two favorite pastimes overlap. It's that brief period in early summer when there's still enough snow for skiing at lakes that are just melting out enough for fishing. I call it the Cutthroats & Couloirs season, and have found that the Sawtooths in Idaho are an ideal place to enjoy it.

We twice jumped the gun in early June when there was still great skiing, but the fishing was slow:

Lakes were just starting to open, so we only caught one small brook trout:

After two more weeks with lots of warm weather, the skiing was worse but the fishing improved dramatically:

Early summer is a wonderful time to be in the mountains. Quiet because the summer backpackers haven't arrived, mosquitos aren't a problem, and animals are moving:

and the flowers are starting to bloom:

Should be a few more weeks of the C & C season left.

I'd be interested in hearing what the C & C season is like in other ranges.

Very nice! I especially love the photo with all the red snow algae. I remember skins through such stuff on an Alaska icefield many years ago, with 2 inches of fresh snow on top. Left lots of glowing red tracks behind us, carved into the bright white.

Excellent, Jim. Can't wait to return to Idahome in a few very short days. Thanks for a few reminders of what we have in store for us.

I hate to throw cold water on a nice thread, but late March is a problem for me. I don't fish and my wife ,who does, doesn't ski. We have a mutual agreement that I can go ski anywhere in the winter and she can go fish anywhere fishing season (which is basically the rest of the time).

The problem comes in lat March when she wants to head out for steelhead and I'm looking for corn. Somebody has to take care of the dogs!

But we manage.
