Sort of relevant, shameless drivel plugging here on the topic: there's much common sense stuff, but maybe a few ideas and pictures you've seen here before.
Having done most of the ADK 46 multiple times and living in Stowe, I feel pretty comfortable up here, but I want to get into the Whites a bit more. Any suggestions outside of the Presidentials that aren't mobbed?

It looks like we will be spending a few nights in Portland, ME in late June since the Marriott points got us a nice room right down town. We can kayak Casco Bay, ride the mail boats, check out the museums, hit up Freeport and drive up to Popham for a swim.
Any restaurants, pubs, etc. we shouldn't miss? _________________ Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Portland is loaded with great restaurants...here's one of my favorites:
If your schedule works out, you should consider taking in a Portland Seadogs game. _________________ "Take it from a member of the male species, walking around in public with an erection is somewhat of an embarrassment unless you are a bit..... off"........Bunion

Gritties in the Old Port section of Portland has good beer -try the bitter. Foodwise, Portland has alot of excellent options: ForeStreet has been a pretty good on the high end, Jays Osyerhouse otherwise. Also the Front room - near the observatory is pretty good. Also DuckFat - seriously.
The Eastland (downtown) is an old Hotel, but has a bar on the top floor with the best view of the city - day or night.

I was there last year biking. I forget where we ate but we almost always eat on the water at some small lobster shack. We took the ferry to Chebeague Island and biked around there for a couple hours. There is a nice small hotel that is great for lunch.
http://www.chebeagueislandinn.com/ Although I am not sure how you would get around that island with out bikes.
There is also a very popular and good lobster shack on the ocean near 2 Lights State Park that is real nice.

bike all the rail / abandoned canal trails in a State
visit the old cool historical sites -- the ones that get little traffic
spend time on a major river such as the Hudson, either on a boat or along the shore; exploring all the towns on a river
on the way, hit a few music festivals with gourmet deli picnics, outrageous sunsets and classical music _________________ Other vegetables have a hard time competing with potatoes.

Thanks for the feedback. We had checked the Sea Dogs schedule when booking the hotel and they have home games each night we are there. I really enjoy watching minor league b-ball at the park.
We might pack up 4 bikes but won't have kayaks. Rentals seems to be available on some of the islands in the Bay, so that will take a 1/2-full day.
Note to self, don't eat at the Jameson but stop into Gritties. Oh and look around for edgeworker's sister (does she ply her trade in the bars or on the street corners? )
Baaahb - I'm not even sure if you've limited my trip to Maine with those recommendations! _________________ Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

She works at Whole Foods last I knew. It may be on a corner. Have a blast!
Local atmosphere: J's Oyster Bar, Dry Dock, Becky's Diner (for breakfast), Gritty's. Good beer but wider selections at $3 Dewey's. $-$$
I would also add any of the "Rooms"; Front Room, Corner Room, Grill Room. Caiola's, Salt Table (fantastic place for a tapas style lunch),
Street & Co for upscale seafood. $$
Vignola's but NOT Cinque Terra. Two Fat Cats (OMG!!!) for baked goods. Bintliff's, esp for Sun brunch (go early)
Gilberts Chowder House, but I prefer Susan's Fish and Chips for fried clams or scallops. $-$$
Any of the Pom's Thai Taste. We've been to all of the sushi places and always had great food altho I have heard Yosaku has gone down hill.
