Wow, I can only assume that this guy just snapped. Apparently it was his first tour for whatever significance that means. Beyond the obvious moral implications of the crime, the implications beyond are not good.
(Yes, I know, many civilians are killed during any military operation and that's horrible enough, but a guy going out and shooting down a dozen plus non combatants in cold blood is a whole step beyond that)
How do you prevent stuff like this?

Wrong, he'd done two prior tours in that fabulous vacation spot, Iraq.

I read 3 tours in Iraq. Regardless, there are no winners in war. |

Limbaugh refused to back down even when it became public knowledge that Kony was engaged in mass murder in Central Africa.
The Rush Limbaugh Show is being broadcast to troops on bases all over the world. However, America has too much at stake, to allow this seedy, ugly-spirited man to roll around in the minds of vulnerable young men.
These soldiers are thousands of miles from home, getting shot at by an enemy indistinguishable from our Afghan allies, for a war whose rationale nobody even remembers any more.
They need something better than an education in anti-Muslim hatred.

You don't.
13 people were shot by Nidal Hasan at Ft. Hood. Some small fraction of the people with guns in the armed forces are going to be nutters. I find it hard to come up some sort of real systemic failure here.
But don't worry-- the military loves blaming anyone tertially involved in a shitshow. Random careers all over the command chain will be ended over this one sick copulate. |

3 tours? I must have missed that. That would make a bit more sense. War can absolutely dehumanize a person.

Soon someone (read Newt, Mittens, or inSantorum) will be saying the victims and people of Afghanistan should be the ones apologizing.
I predict the Afghans and the Taliban will be shooting beating stabbing and blowing up every American soldier in sight. A very rapid trial followed by public execution of the perpetrator is the only real solution they will understand or accept.
More very dark bloody days to come, sad but true.

Seung-Hui Cho was a college student who terrorized 58 people in a very direct manner.

I would like to suggest that calling someone an idiot might be a good way to get on the path of escalation, and that it's not very fair to later petition me when things get really ugly. |
