Had lunch with a friend today and he proposed that we build some igloos this winter for some igloo to igloo skiing.
I'm intrigued.
With our long approaches out here igloo shelters in some key spots would be very useful.
Would also be great to give the kids some winter camping experience in a fun way i think (they are outdoor girls big time)
So... any input from anyone with igloo experience? (Seems like i remember a couple of threads about this before but i didn't run a search.)
How about any experience or input on this Grand Shelter Icebox igloo tool. _________________

A few years ago, I built one partially out of boredom, partially so that I could say that I built one. Half way through the build, I had my doubts, but it turned out great.
Used only a snow saw and a shovel. Important to find a good snow pack that you can "quarry" from quickly/easily. I would imagine that 2 or more people would make the process go quite quickly, but doing it yourself is do-able. |

Worth every penny if you're going to build an igloo.

This is where the igloo tool rules, you can build it anywhere from just about any kind of snow. I've done it both ways and the igloo tool makes the job go quicker and faster.

Great photo bbense, exactly what i'm envisioning.
I do remember that thread now wfin, thanks for finding it for me. Looks like it's on the icebox website as well.
great series of photos edgeworker,
I'm sold on the Icebox tool by the looks of it, will be looking for building tips when we do. _________________

X 10 on the igloo maker. If you're proficient at finding and harvesting blocks from quarries, its not needed and can slow you down. But for our variable snow in Colorado, it rules...
We build igloo villages every year, connected with tunnels for spring time shenanigans. I recommend you do the same. |

We've built a couple igloos w/icebox in our backyard here in Carson.
Worked great, lasted weeks. Snow ranged from light cold powder to soupy warmed rained-on mush from the driveway. _________________ I could ski this a whole lot better if I didn't have these sticks strapped to my feet! |

Igloo building with your kids is great fun, though I couldn't get mine to spend a night in one, even in the backyard. Every winter traveler should know how to build a snow shelter.
A great soft cover book, "How To Build An Igloo" by Yankielun offers up a variety of types from caves to large multi person igloos.

The two igloo tools are posted in our auction, even though it technically starts Tuesday. (It takes some time to get all the items up.) Everything will close Thursday evening, anything without bids or below reserve will get reposted and close Friday evening. (Anything still left then will go on ebay through our nonprofit account.)
Igloo Ed also donated a snow shelter door.
