Did alternative A once. Warm! Steep. Narrow-> lots of kick turns. Snow slobbering soft. Miserable, and pretty much wiped out the memory of going down.

Alternative B sounds good, though--unless, by funky, you mean freak-out-the-spouse rock, ice or steepness?

It's a mellow traverse, followed by a bit of "oh, how am I going to connect through this benchy section" and then one or two "yeah, looks like I have to take off my skis for a little bit". Then when you're almost around to the bottom of the big field that drops off south from the summit, you encounter a steepish rib that you need to pick a line and punch up, 100' or so; late in the day with soft snow it shouldn't give you much trouble (if you don't like the looks of it, you can expend a bit more effort and go around it, higher better than lower).

Overall it's just not that bad. But you know, don't take my word for it, check it out on a topo map etc.

Thanks--wouldn't do it without looking at the map, etc., but it helps to hear from someone who's been there.

Anybody been on the northside lately? If so, how much snow at the Devestated area?

None at the parking lot on Monday, 5/28. You'd have to hike thru the trees and at least halfway up the bench before hitting snow.

Go get the peak while you can.

The NPS is closing the entire mountain on June 4th.

So skiing Lassen done for the year or just via the summit trail? could you conceivably just hike up the SE bowl and stay away from the trail work?
