as i feel the excitement build i can hardly stand it
not sure of the cfs of the ark but it is at a good level all around. i am just trying to stay out of town and enjoy the quiet, very happy i chose to live out of town back in the '80's, especially this week-end.
if you can't keep the sunny side up, keep it out of the river. j

Been doing other things the last few years but always loved FIBARK. Used to do the DR race with my buddy Greg in my open tandem canoe. _________________ Creeds and doctrines are like a raft to get you to the other shore and then to relinquish. DR in a tandem (esp an old Royalex pig weighing in around 90 Lbs) would be tempting fate, but it would give you a good excuse to drink at the beer tent. I won't be impressing anyone, but I'll come out to watch the Hooligan's Race, drink beer, and watch the Pro Freestyle tomorrow.
If I see anyone who doesn't care if I tele I'll buy a round.... _________________ "Enjoy every sandwich" advice from Warren Zevon |

unfortunately you just painted the picture of how someone is going to lose their live(s) this week-end. it happens every year. i'm not doing anything this year.... used to get so serious. i took first place in the hooligans singles race two years in a row speaking of serious. along with my surf board, i wore a dry suit with swim fins on my feet and soft hand paddles, like it's some kind of law to go fast? |

My most memorable DR race (except maybe the one where I beat Gary Lacy at the finish for third) was '83 high water in a tandem canoe. We had gallon jug bailers, but by the time we got to the F st bridge, 30 seconds into the race, we were swamped to the gunnels. Pulled over and dumped it, and proceeded to repeat maybe a dozen times, even with learning not to charge into the waves so much.
We ran Cottonwood fine, then pulled over and dumped. The only other OC2 had a full skirt; they swam there but still beat us.
Won't be there this weekend. Thanks for the memories. _________________ It's peace and love until someone post hole the skin track. Then the gloves come off and the pretty ponies get shot. |

Our first year was '95 which I think was a record level. Big snow and a lot of rain brought it up to I don't remember what, but into the 4-5000 range at Salida. The river was pretty intimidating that morning. We actually only swan once, and that was on a spot that at normal water levels wasn't much more than class II boogie water but at that level it was more class III+ and took us totally by surprise.
Cottonwood was huge but we got through upright. We had to hug the float bags to get under the bridge at Cotopaxi. Pretty memorable. _________________ Creeds and doctrines are like a raft to get you to the other shore and then to relinquish. Neither cling to the raft or reject it when drowning. those canoes can be more trouble than they are worth... i had a friend, doc decide to run it in his though, with me as back-up. it would be my job to toss him a snack and squirt a water bottle off the bridges for him to drink. then he decided to drink a large can of some diet milk/shake someone gave him right before the start and they were off. my job quickly became to dump buckets of water from the bridge on top of him to wash off the vomit. for some reason he wore a full dry suit, 90 out and was putting himself in some real danger trying to take it off while on the river trying to keep moving as well. meanwhile his illegal electric bailer wasn't working and he lost his bucket so he had to keep stopping to dump that barge of a canoe.
well he finished the race and to look at many of the locals it seemed like he was the only one in it and i suppose this is the week-end to talk about it. it really was a hell of a race doc... r.i.p. |
