Okay, please tell me there's a lot more kid stoke going on out there or I may have to post a video of Hazel shredding the chair lift run this weekend.
Aren't you guys tired of Hazel yet?
NEED MORE KID STOKE!
I've been posting our kid stoke in my self-appreciatory Whistler Sux thread during the season, rather than double posting. And my kids are past fartbags... but still lots of smiles.
Here's a short summary of the season so far - Maya is now 8, and Nicolas is now 6. They are ripping it up and love it... skiing pretty much most terrain. Nico is fast and reckless. Maya wants to be a pro mogul skier. Maya has skied the last 2 weeks with a cast on her arm and one pole... and it just doesn't seem to affect them. Love it.
There... that's the season so far. Both of 'em have about 25 days now and showing no sign of boredom or letting up! _________________ "It's a strange world made up of extreme horizontal and vertical planes. Where you find diagonal, you find skiing."

She's 3. But I want to add a disclaimer, since I have been hearing a lot lately on the rope tow, magic carpet and chairlift "Wow! That's amazing!"
My kid? She doesn't jump in to things. She is NOT a risk taker. As evidence? We never baby proofed our house. She can be very, very tentative with new activities. Even now, she won't jump off the couch or do stupid kid stuff.
That's a blessing and a curse. She got about 15 days last season and if I had to draw a graph of her progress, the changes would be so incremental, you would not even notice them. Seriously.
But she got 15 days. And so far this season, she has 15 or so days.
So, yeah. She's rad. But it took a lot of time to get there. I am learning as as I go in this process. I try to let her take the lead with gentle, but firm pushes. Example? One day, she walked outside and put her own skis on. Had I tried to teach her that, forget it. But it took 25 days of wearing skis on her feet and helping her put them on for her to want to do it.
Here's the other thing: Mom and Dad ski. Period. It's our family culture. So there really isn't an option about what to do on the weekends. We don't do swim lessons on weekends, we don't do dance class on weekends (which is her current obsession), we don't even schedule lunch dates with friends on weekends, unless they come to the mountain and ski with us.
Also, we eat a lot of chocolate. Every time you go up the lift, you get a "ski treat". Oh yeah. And she eats A LOT of snow.
No matter the age of the kid, 6 weeks, 4 years, whatever- GET THEM ON THE MOUNTAIN. Hazel was hanging out in the lodge at 3 months old. Ski culture is kind of ingrained her. At 1 1/2, we had her in those plastic cross country skis, just playing around. At 2, we had her in real skis, on the magic carpet.
Now, if we could just find her some other 3-year-old shredders to hang out with... _________________ Check out my blog: climberchica.blogspot.com

Thanks for the report and advice. we have a hut trip with Lillian (and 2 other couples/kids) planned for next month. Because, as you say, skiing (and hut trips) is what we do and not doing them is not an option. _________________ "anecdotes are fine assbaggery is not"

No ski stoke here, because we really don't have much snow this year.
But any chance that there is a snow flake in the air the little dude is on it. We keep the plastic strap on skis outside by the door. He's out there tracking up the yard at the sign of the first flake falling. Little sis (18 months) trucks along behind him, in here fart bag carrying the poles and sings "ski ski ski ski ski"

I am really glad to hear that it is possible to get the reluctant ones going. My Mom describes my daughter as "the kid who could be left alone in a room full of dynamite and matches" (not that we have tried), and it sounds like we just need to get her out more. This is a perfect season to spend on the bunny hill anyway She does love her xc skis and her sled, so I think there is hope.

This is a sweet thread, Katiyana is only 11months but I am so pumped to get her on the mountain. It would be nice to get her on some skis next season...time will tell...

No pictures ye this year.
The 9 and 13 y/os are leading the way all over the local pipmple and I am glad to let them think that the old man can just about keep up.
We do spend a lot of time jumping off of the ice sculptures in the vegetable patch. They've even led the family pin-head across some rails. No more straight skiing the fun box. That was a nasty face-plant. _________________ Sh'ma Yis'ra'eil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad.

Finally figuring out photo posting, and adding some kid stoke.
Early on, getting dragged around by mom and dad.
Hey Mom, your bindings are broken (Age 1)
Age 1.5, checking out Dad's boots
Age 1.5, quality napping in the sled
Missing some photos of bunny hill time; but I'll say that magic carpet is a back-saver and much more fun for kids.
And then all of a sudden (Age 3.5) it clicks and this happens:
First big lift ride
And checking out the run. No leashes!
I'll just add that climberchica has it right on. Just make it part of "normal". And for us, just not pushing beyond having fun. If its one bunny hill run, then so be it.
This last weekend Max was cranky from the parking lot, so just went straight to the lodge and ate snacks. Then he perked up and did two great runs on the big lift. Just got to roll with it.

And let them pick out their own gear. It was expensive to buy brand-new pink skis and pink boots, but wow, is she excited to put them on. _________________ Check out my blog: climberchica.blogspot.com
