yes, there is 10cm of snow at cypress. just got back from an afternoon skiing at the downhill area. place is almost empty, though sideslipping snowboarders Rolling Eyes were making sure to keep things swept clean for everyone...

actually, the snow off of sky chair is pretty nice; mostly skied up, but there are pockets. down low the snow is heavy. but a good day to tele inbounds - forgiving, fast, and you can ski in a windbreaker.

(PSA:btw: really cheap deals on passes for next year, especially if you are a family AND also want to ski nordic.)

it was almost like a day at one's own private ski area.

and: they said at customer relations that they are aiming to stay open "until the end of April."

Last night (thursday) was probably the nicest night skiing for me this season. Lots of soft fresh snow to be had with some nice chest and face shots.

I think the 22cm overnight they reported got packed down by the daytime riders and the mixed snow/rain during the day but there was a nice 10 cm of fresh on top of that.

Pretty nice for end of March!

No complaints whatsoever to be made indeed.

Trend of stupid deep continued today. We found another 15cm of new low density over the past couple of day's snowfall to round things off at about a metre of new snow for the past few days.

The cake is starting to look pretty right side up in most places, with the lowest density where it should be. Still, we encountered some religious whumpfs and some shooting cracks in locations where the past two day's winds had stiffened surface layers, generally between 1700-2000m, especially at ridgetops.

Layers directly above 120326 crust starting to give more resistant planar results, but in some areas blocks still failing on cutting at crust or up to 10cm above. One compression result at CTH Sudden Planar down 115 with considerable energy on the release on a NW aspect at 1900m gave us reason to think carefully about our route selection.

We skied SW facing slopes up to 35 degrees but mostly at 30 or less in relatively tight glades with some larger openings. Ski pen up to 65cm on some of these loaded slopes below treeline.

Climbing still very good once track is set. Some moistening of top 4cm when the sun made its appearance, but as soon as clouds interfered, this refroze. Snowing S1 at 2000m at 1530 hours when we headed down.

In three days of touring we have encoutered zero (0) other parties out, most likely because inbounds has been quite epic as well. Good news is there's lots sitting out there waiting for folks this weekend. Even though stability is improving, one needs to think carefully about what they're tickling. Saw three slackcountry skier accidentals on steep convexities at about 1900-2100m on NW aspects on our way out today. None stepped down, but there have been reports of step-downs to 120cm deep in the past 36 hours.

We had a class 3 remote release at 2160m on a N facing couloir. Probably wind loaded, definitely wind packed on the ridge. Took out the couloir and wrapped around to the NW face and took out part of our skin track. Debris ran to 1850m, probably 950m long, 300m wide.

Slid to ground on facets.

We were on the slope north of Steep creek.

Thanks, Sharon.

Another great day of freshies and blue. Solar starting to have a significant effect on various aspects. Size two natural off steep SE terrain on Metaldome this afternoon. Did not step down. Lots of loose snow wet avies off of steep rock cliffs up to 2200m.

Snow continues to be stupid deep on north aspects... Very Happy

Sweet pow on Chief Pascal on the Duffey Lake road this weekend. Barely any cars in the Cerise Crk parking lot on Saturday. Dust on crust to about 1400 meter. Knee-deep light snow at TL and BTL. Sunday it had snowed another 10-15 cm. Conditions were even better, faceshots every run. On steep slopes 20-30 cm sluffed easily. With all the pow goodness at TL and below we played rather conservatively. Many other groups out, and some open terrain in the east facing bowl and Equinox were skied, resulting in bigger sluffing (from what we could see). On the way out moist snow in the flat clear cuts.

Were you the group of 4 skied north facing Pascal trees on Sunday?? If so, we were right behind you - digging a pit as you guys dropped in!

Our pit crew reported CTH resistant planar on north facing slopes around 1850m. Field of play ~1900 - 1600m. As noted above, a bit of sluffing on steeper slopes, and nothing but deep powder goodness!

Next time up we did a cautious approach to the East facing bowl after a brief discussion on changing aspects. Our spotter (unknowingly) remotely triggered a small sz 1 getting into place. It fractured below her and slid on the Mar 26 crust. Our avy poodle discovered it 3 turns past the spotter when he found himself skiing on ice rather than deep pow! Mission aborted. He also reported whumpfing on his way back up so even a lower angle approach was out of the question.

It was a very good reminder of just how much conditions can change on different aspects. We knew the layer was there - but it was still interesting to see first hand how reactive it was in the same area, same elevation, same time of day, but on a different aspect.

We happily stuck to north shots for the rest of the day. The only complaints being "my legs are burning legs from skiing deep pow", "my goggles are full of snow from those face-shots", and a very legitimate "I think I just pulled my hip flexor f*cking up that kick-turn and falling backwards." Grrr....

Schizophrenic weather - light snow, clouds, sun, and strong gusts of SW at various times throughout the day. FL rose in the late afternoon with ski quality diminishing below 1400m.

Hip flexors heal in 3 days, right? Evil or Very Mad

We were inbounds, but still very high quality times were had. And the little girl qualified for the freestyle program next year. Some shots were taken with the kids on Saturday, then we skied with big kids on Sunday.

Double post from kidsstoke thread on some images:

It was a great weekend. With over 50cm of snow and coldish weather, it was time to search out the jumps.

Notice Sumi along for the ride (in her hood) - part of her classroom blog project is to photograph Sumi wherever she goes:

Glad you're all finding the goods up the Duffey and elsewhere and still playing safe! It's gonna' be a loooong wind-down to this season!

Couple of vehicle break ins at the Cayoosh lot today. Keep an eye out for someone with big feet wearing a really dirty orange Pataguccia DAS parka. I mean, really, who steals shoes and a puffy that looks like a diesel mechanic has worn it to work for several years?

Guess the more easterly exposure got more heat during the previous nice weather... pretty amazing how warm it felt when the sun got out

My theory: we were in the lee of Pascal in strong SW wind and got mixed 'blue hole' and turbulence.

Good luck with the hip flexors...

Generous snowfall last night has put Whistler over 500 inches or forty feet or 12 metres for the season at 1650m. WB has decided to extend the season until May 28th.

So the stupid deep continues. Last night's snow (44cm so far), along with today's, combined with the strong winds, should create a natural cycle moving out the past week's snow in places and perhaps pulling out deeper layers. We'll see what's left when the skies clear on Wednesday...

In the meantime, the resorts should ski well in protected areas...
