Pinnah, the Great Gulf caption on that pic had my internal map screwed up for a sec. Read your description and it finally made sense. Hey, that's a lot of snow! Nice route to see it from too.

I'm afraid my crappy camera didn't adequately capture this moment from last Sunday. I'm at about 3,600 feet on Mt. Mansfield, looking north over Smuggler's Notch. That gray stuff at the top of the frame isn't my finger, it's a really dense grey cloud deck that's about 50-100 feet over my head. I was expecting it to pour any minute, but the rain held off all day. Made for a nice hike.

Why, thanks. It needs two guys in floppy hats and knee breeches pointing vaguely off into the distance though. Smile

Dirk, that's an awesome shot. Being there must have been 17x better.

Thanks Bob. Sometimes you get lucky, even with the cheapest of cameras.

Yeah, it was a nice hike. The weather forecast was terrible, and I almost didn't go, but in the end I didn't even need the raincoat. And of course, I had the mountain to myself, except for a couple of crazed birders looking for the Bicknell's Thrush.

Hah!

My partner in crime for the Howker trip (our own Dave "Beer Thread" S) is one of those crazed birders and seeing a Bicknell's Thrush was one of the motivations for the destination. We spent the late afternoon and evening hanging out on the highest "Howk" watching the gathering dusk and listening to the several thrush calling back and forth to each other. I'm not sure if any of them were Bicknell's as I was more interested in taking in the view and cutting off chucks of good sharp cheddar while the fan belt in my brain became unhitched and slapped around with no purpose.

More WMNF fun from this evening.

There's a mondo vista up on the top of this rock. I didn't dare go up though because the young dog showed that he's completely clueless about cliffs. On Sunday we were on a die-if-you-fall-edge and he was enthralled to find coyote poop to eat and proceeded to back off the cliff while doing so. He caught himself, but I revoked his cliff pass on the spot. Sucks. There was some serious vista bacon to bring home tonight. We had a good time getting soaked in the rainy twilight nonetheless.

Bonus shots from last Thursday. A mile or so south on the same ridge.

Look familiar? Smile
