|
|
Too often I hear people on this site using confusing terminology for the park. I am tired of hearing people talk about backwards, turning in the air, helicopters, and other such defunct terms. Here is a dictionary of park terms, feel free to add your own and definitions.
Switch=backwards
Cab=any backwards takeoff, ex-cab 3 is a switch three
Half Cab= Cab 180
Natural= the natural direction a rider spins or grinds
Unnatural= the opposite of natty
Switch Up= spinning 180 on a rail
Frontside=spinning downhill while on a rail, or leaving it
Blindside=spinning uphill while on a rail or leaving it
Rodeo= spinning backflip
Misty= spinning frontflip
Cork=spinning off up to 90 degrees off axis, leading with feet
Bio=spinning off up to 90 degrees off axis, leading with head
I'll add more to this list as i think of them. Feel free to help, also is a grab dictionary needed? _________________ skiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskis |

Nice!! What about grabs....
Safety grab: grabbing the same side ski with the same side hand underfoot. ex. grab the outside (underfoot) of the left ski with the left hand
Mute grab: grabbing the toe of the oppisite side ski and pulling it into a cross. ex. left hand grabs the toe of the right boot and pulls the ski into more tweak.
Toxic grab: grabbing the back of the same side ski and pushing the cross. ex. you cross the skis at the toe and then your right hand grabs/pushes the tail of the right ski into more tweak.
Correct me if Im wrong here please!! And keep these coming I have been curious about all the terms. |

Critical Grab= Grabbing towards the nose on your opposite ski, uncrossed, in my opinion one of the greatest grabs ever
Grabbing True= when your grab is fully on the tip or tail of the ski
Gorilla Steez= Hunched over with arms low, classic tanner hall style for years, tho he is now relaxing _________________ skiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskis |

what about a daffy? or a twister? or a spread eagle? what happened to all the "old school" tricks that I could do on my 210 long straight boards? I miss those. It was good to see the video where they only did old tricks... that brought back memeories. _________________ Smile when you're going down, it looks more graceful.

| What about my favorite, the Japan Grab. Grabbing the opposite ski towards the tail with the opposite hand. ex. right hand grabs the inside of the left ski behind the boot. Sorry for the crappy explanation, can anyone help describe it better? I love the way this grab looks. |

| Saw a pic of a dude grabbing both tips and pulling the flex on his boots/bindings so the tips came up next to his head off a cliff. Awesome tele-specific move... anyone know if its got a name? |

I believe it is called a rocket air. I have heard this term a bunch of times in the past but I don't know if the name has evolved. I am pretty sure I know the exact picture that you are talking ahout it, it is on the wall in one of the shacks at lake louise.
Easy: I think the japan air has you grabbing the outside of the ski with the hand passing underneath the running surface of ths ski. Ie, left hand grabs right ski. Arm is behind back, grabbing behind boot and under the ski. Right ski is pulled up to crotch while the left is kicked out to the left side as parallel to the ground as possible for straight air. See Dylan crossman doing one in the Alpine meadows comp sectoin. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always called that direction "backside." I switched over from snowboarding and I always heard things called a "backside 180" or "backside boardslide." In fact, I have never in my life heard the term "blindside," not once. And this is in years of skiing/riding at Boreal, which is park rat central.

yah they are pretty much interchangeable on rails, the only problem is that skiers are starting to use backside to refer to unnatural spins as well, so i kinda like sticking to blindside _________________ skiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskiskis |

Yup, the rocket, that's the one. In alpine, ultra 80's, stylie lingo it's been called a "plake pike" (right hand crosses to grab left skis tip. Crank ski back toward you for extra stylie points), or much more fun, a "Zudnick". Anyone remember Scott Kennett, a bumper form Telluride and that dog of his.
Say it together now kids. "zood-nik"
Tele makes them much more stylie with the rocket variation, and much more committing. Pulled one in Squaw's park and got a cheer from the lift crowd. Yeeha! _________________ Oui oui, le ski extreme. Je suis le poseur. . . l'homme de fromage. . . |

I love old-school trix. The daffie, back scratcher, twisters, spreads, ball grabs, screaming seamens. And of course doing , doubles, triples, and quads of any combo of above.
i have been wanting to pull a rocket in the park, but have commited to it yet. I know the lift riders will love it. |
