My spouse and I are heading to Austin for a weekend exploring the central Toiyabes. We'd enjoy having any Tipsters accompany. If interested, PM before 8pm friday. _________________ Other vegetables have a hard time competing with potatoes. |

renormr, It's looking like we will not be able to meet you over there this weekend. Our little one has a bug and we can't get away. There's an off chance that I may be able to sneak over there Sunday but I doubt it.
Hope you find some good conditions and slopes to report back on.
The last warm storm we had come through the last weekend of January provided for some good skiing at the 10,000 foot level. Here are some pictures from that weekend.
Out here if you are on a 10,000 foot ridgeline you are often amongst the ancients, Bristlecone and Limber Pine trees that is.
Moriah seeking shelter under a Bristlecone.
Liz knows how to enjoy fresh snow.
The snow down at the 9,000 foot level wasn't bad either. Here cruddiver finds a little air in the powder.
Liz demonstrates how to p-turn the powder.
Wish I would have shot some better footage that day but these pictures give a good idea of how good it was.
Hope you find some similar snow this weekend renormr.

Ah-hah Austin, NV not Austin, TX. I thought that was a weird post, but now it makes sense. Doh!
Nice pictures jw!! Either I'm tingling with joy in looking at them, or I'm cold here in my basement. I think the former! Schweet! |

Paris. ha, ha ... sounds like NV and ID have the same name towns. Too funny.
If he joins you, I'm sure you'll get that high. |

About time I added something to this thread.
Much skiing has been done since last post, more pics and TR's than I have time for at the moment but I did manage a quick edit of digital cam film clips taken on yesterday's tour.
Dan Morris of the Ely Ranger District Forest Service is the skier, he's a fixed heel guy but so what he's an awesome backcountry ski partner.
Very fun day, the powder skiing continues on the north faces despite warm temps.
Here's the video link. |

not sure what that bird of prey was renormr.
Could have been a young Golden Eagle, lots of those in the Schell Creeks.
Maybe just some large hawk?
Almost positive it wasn't an Osprey though. If so he was definitely lost. |

Have had quite a few big days lately seeking out new descents to go with new skis. It's very fun living and skiing here as most of the new descents we do are first descents. From what I can gather this was another one
Here's a few photos from a good day.
To start with Liz and I finally skied the Dog Leg of Snake Canyon that we've eyeballed for years. Hard to believe it took this long to get to skiing this one. It's 2,200 feet long of mostly 25 to 30 degrees in pitch with the top section being steeper.
Conditions were variable, from hard pack to wind buff soft snow. It was great fun all the same.
A nice mellow tour up.
Traveling the ridge before us was a mountain lion, never saw the critter and the tracks were older.
The view down the intended descent.
Some pictures from along the way.
Had to bask in the sun for a bit at the bottom.
The skin up and out was fun and at times interesting as we hadn't got wall to wall skins for our new skis yet. (this climb had us ordering some that night)
The exit off the mountain was another good descent of 2,500 feet but the shadows overtook the day and we had skied that route many times so on this day we just skied it taking no photos.
Hope the post reflects what a fun day it was for my wife and I.
Cheers |

Joni, that photo was just for you
It was taken in a bit of a tongue in cheek fashion, Moriah wanted to play and since I was laying there anyway why not pose.
Telefriend- those graphics keep me feeling young and 'rad' by making my mom raise her eyebrows. for more on those check the ski review on the Insanes that I did. Love those Voile Insanes!!!!
Here's a couple of pictures from Thursday which was the start of a two day powder binge. Big snows here the last three days.
The pictures don't do the day justice and the following day was even better.
No time for more pictures at the moment because the '0 to 2 year old easter egg hunt' is about to begin gotta run, don't know which is more tiring skiing or trying to keep up with a two year old that doesn't know how to walk but sure knows how to run. |
