I lead a group of nordic ski club and nordic ski patrol members up to Manitoba for the weekend. I met neilm and dewam was there too. We camped overnight and skied powder for a couple of days and it was a blast. 18 people,8 dogs and 1 snow pit to cook in.

Here are some pictures:

Bryce right before he's going to drop down for his first run of the day.

And Ed's pretty happy too, but unlike Bryce, he knows how much fun he's in for.

Ganik in his room with a view:

Bryce looking pretty happy with the bus he's driving.

Here's Ed coming on around on a turn.

Well now its Dave's turn to spray some powder. With Belle in hot pursuit. Perfect snow for dogs. Good hard crust underneath 4 to 6 inches of powder on top.

And Ed coming back around again.

At the end of the run a pretty happy Dave!

Thanks everybody for such a great time. I can hardly wait till we do it again.

MANITOBA????

As in... "the province where you can watch your dog run away for days."

Manitoba, where? As someone who was raised in n.w. Ontario, that is no Manitoba that I know.

Oh, ya - that had me going for a bit too. A TR from Manitoba??? That's definitely not the Manitoba I know.

Nice shots on the TR.

A trip report from Manitoba. At first I thought it was a joke. Then I thought it was a x-country touring trip. Then I saw the photos and thought "that's not the Manitoba I drove across..."

There is apparently a small ski hill about an hour east of Winnipeg. It has 500 feet of vertical and is permanently scoured into a sheet of diamond hard ice, as it's the only thing the prairie winds hit in about 2,000 miles.

Now that's skiing.

Nice Pics Bob! I think my legs have finally recovered. Next time I won't bring so much gear.

The snow forecast looks great for AK! Girdwood got 5" last night.

Whoops that would be Manitoba Mountain. I never knew it was called that. What a slap in the face for all those hardy souls in MB.

Still was alot of fun. and the dogs were, well, ummm, errrr, dog tired!

Great stuff!

I looked up this Manitoba Mountain to ease my geographical confusion and found a description on this site:

thanks for the clarification on the name. Folks from Manitoba would be quite surprised to know there is a mountain named after the province.
As I said perviously, great pics. We're off to Wells Gray and Trophy Mtn next week. Wahoo!!!!

The Forest Service should build a bridge across Canyon Creek further north near Black Creek and then build a FS cabin. Then people could access the most excellent terrain north of Manitoba more easily. No one skis that slope because it's too far and no trail through the thick forest. It would be nice to have better access to the nicer slopes around here. Our options seem so limited for day trips and with the increased popularity of this sport we should rethink this.

I met with Dave Gibbons the old FS supervisor a couple of years ago and he said that was in the works. But then I've been told the FS always offers lots of promises. A bridge from that gravel pit would be nice and would open up all that terrain north of Black Creek to day trips. There is some pretty good terrain of all kinds of abilities "over there".
