Thank you little baby el nino!!!

THE WEATHER PATTERN IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE MONDAY AS A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM FROM THE GULF OF ALASKA APPROACHES THE WEST COAST. THIS SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO BRING COOLER TEMPERATURES AND SIGNIFICANT PRECIPITATION ALONG WITH GUSTY WINDS THROUGH MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK. PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN MONDAY AFTERNOON ALONG THE COASTAL RANGE AND SPREAD ACROSS INTERIOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BY TUESDAY MORNING. PRECIPITATION IS LIKELY ON TUESDAY AND WILL LINGER INTO AT LEAST WEDNESDAY. STRONG DYNAMICS ALONG WITH DECENT MOISTURE WITH THIS SYSTEM COULD BRING SIGNIFICANT PRECIPITATION TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. SNOW LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO BE AROUND 7000 TO 8000 FEET TUESDAY AND THEN DROP TO AROUND 6000 TO 7000 FEET ON WEDNESDAY.

It looks like snow levels are going to stay pretty high, but hey, it is still the middle of October. At least anything 9K or better should get loaded with snow this week. 125 MPH ridgetop winds - yikes! Secure your trash cans and lawn furniture.

Here's a look at the ominous clouds that settled in over the mountains near Tahoe yesterday.

I took the shot on a 'cross ride that connected Mill Creek, Alder Creek, and the Silver Fork of the American River. There are dirt roads and trails everywhere in that area. The brand new Crystal Basin/Silver Fork National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map is great for making sense of the spaghetti bowl of travel-ways. If you spend time on the Eldorado NF, consider buying it. The map is recreation-oriented and like nothing else that has been published covering that Forest.

Here's a map of the 40-mile ride I put together. All but three miles was on dirt.

One of the best lenticular photos I've ever seen. It's too bad about the snow levels, but, one the bright side, the state really needs the water anyway.

B you badass stud!!!! No wonder you rock & roll when you go bc. Me, I'm still trying to muster energy to dust off any of my bikes and now it looks to be about time to wax up the skis. This is rediculous, I gotta get in shape, maybe I'll make it a new years resolution...

All the best, tOMFLOUNDERINGON
...the question shouldn't be if I care if you tele, the real question should be why do you care if I don't?

Current satellite representations on the weather page indicate heavy snow happening in the Kirkwood/Carson Pass area. Hope it's true!

Hey, uh, is there a place where a guy killing time in San Francisco might drive up to make some turns on wednesday/thursday? Somewhere high enough to have lots of snow, with a grassy base, and good access?

Mt. Rose Meadows might be your best bet, then Carson Pass. If the snow level stays at 8K and doesn't go higher, then you might be able to get turns in Round Valley near the Peter Grubb hut. If we really get as much rain as predicted out of this storm, then anywhere you don't get rain will be skiable at least on the less rocky parts. 4-6" of rain in the Bay Area is at least 3-4 feet of snow in the mountains.

If you're really desperate, you can find hidden stashes. Just follow the wind and find out where it dumps the snow, but use your brain. Avalanches are possible and rocks are never far away.

Man... I know it may not be skiable but it's damn good to see snow up there. Sugarbowl got a little bit of coverage. See webcams:

Yep, it's cool.

Pray the NWS is wrong:

SNOW LEVELS ARE STARTING THE DAY AROUND 7000 FEET BUT ARE EXPECTED TO RISE TO AROUND 9000 FEET BY TONIGHT WITH WARMER AIR ADVECTING IN.

They opened last week, but I'm pretty sure that webcam is going to show what snow they have washed away by tomorrow morning.
