Redtop yesterday. Nice powder snow, though heavy as usual. The FS Ranger wanted to make sure I was aware of the avy danger on those funnels.

Chargers and Switchbacks make breaking trail almost like not breaking trail, and slithers thru trees like a snake. But lack of waxless scales made the trip out rather inelegant. I screwed up the route a bit.

Yes. I broke into Birthday Lakes last weekend in two feet of pow. Didn't take much of a slope to start hearing settlement groans. With the cold week and more snow on the way I'm becoming a fan of flat or at least well anchored with minimal chance of buried hoar for next weekend.

Went up yesterday and was shocked at the amount of snow. Thought I'd be able to drive at least to mp 5 near the lower gate -- no luck, which means lots of snow. I had to park my element just past the lower falls a bit over two miles in. There was about 20 in. of consolidated snow at that point and very sketchy rut driving past it. Saw a few trucks totally stuck on my ski back down, which is the real danger of driving further when the Mary road becomes single lane snow rut travel. I skinned up to the east ridge trail and headed up. I probably shaved a good mile or more off the ascent by taking a straight shot up the ridge a mile in. Gotta love the very consolidated skinnable snow, fat skis, and wall to wall skins. I'd say I was climbing close to a 40 degree slope through the old growth. There was enough snow to ski the steep tree lines, though a lot of melted snow bombs and fallen branches make it less than desirable -- good skinning though. The top was untouched consolidated with about 2 inches of melted butter on top -- wonderful. I'd say there is four feet of snow up there. I made it up the east ridge in 45 minutes with my direct route and headed down the meadow in creamy corn. I cut across the creek to the saddle and skied down the road. From the summit back the six and a half miles to the car took 1 hour and 15 minutes -- fast ski back down the road. 3 hours and fifteen minutes car door to car door (I had a daddy day care deadline). I'd say the road will melt further this week and next weekend should be easy access turns with a little new on top.

Nice Memorial Day up in the Coast Range. 4100elev, 41mi from the ocean, 410' vert, and 4.1in of good snow. All the glades were still in.

Played hop-scotch in the woods above the head of the creek...note to self: probably don't have to do that again this year.
