It has been a few years since we had an ongoing thread for ski conditions on the Front Range. Hopefully people will post in this thread to keep it going. It doesn't matter to me whether you are doing inbounds or backcountry as long as this thread stays up-to-date. I don't get out every weekend, but I will do my best to let everyone know how conditions are when I do get out.

Now we just need some snow!

I spend a decent amount of time in the Central and Northern end of the Front Range and will do my best to contribute!

Cool. Any reports are good reports. Even if people are getting out in the Sawatch or the Elks, I wouldn't mind seeing those reports here too. I plan on doing mostly backcountry this year, and I like to hear about the snowpack in Colorado.

Just got back from Butler Gulch. Sure, it was thin, but I did make some soft turns and I didn't do any real damage to my skis.

Butler Gulch

thin, with significant wind scour in the saddle looking down toward Hassel Lake. Berthoud weather station reported max gust of 160 friday night.

And... drove my truck into that ditch, classic rookie move
Got some digging practice

Saw a slide off Loveland pass Saturday morning... up by the big cornice (on the right as you head down the pass towards A-Basin).

A couple of ski tracks comming out of it, and folks still hiking up..

Oh well..

Ferried snowboarders up Loveland pass late this morning. Encouraged them to get, learn, and ski with gear.

Here's a nice before and after of the slide from yesterday.

I took this photo of a large group of people on top of the kitchen wall. For those who don't know, this is a very sketchy
place to ski any time of year. (E facing, frequently windloaded, 30-45 degrees)

30 minutes later. (notice the person hiking back up the bootpack to the lookers right of the slide)

A closer look at the fracture. (Note the track heading off the cornice above the slide.)

Whoever was involved in the decision to ski this line is an idiot, and should really think about what they're doing before there's more snow on the ground. Just because something looks like it's in doesn't mean it's safe to ski. This area in particular is extremely dangerous any time of year.

I'm done now.

@theskier - Cool pics! Neat to see the before and after! Can you tell me what the time frame was between these shots, or did you see it run? It looks like the cornice got bigger, unless the angle of the sun is fooling my eye...

I ran into Hacksaw at Loveland today and he told me someone took pics of this slide, so that's presumably you. Kudos.

I did a quick fx line inspection/profile on this slide today. This was on the skier's left crown face in the lower break. See if you can make out my profile (hope it makes sense)...

-- Surface --
20cm slab 4F
--
2cm Fist

20cm slab 1F
--
3cm facets
-- *Avalanche broke at this interface* --
2cm crust P (bed surface)
--
5cm facets
-- Ground --

Compression test = CT0 Q1 Shocked Shot out while cutting the back
ECT 4 Shocked

It's worth noting that other nearby slopes were mostly wind transport powder. They didn't have as much (or any) layering. I'm curious what the North side of the pass looks like.

Can't believe what some of these people are skiing. In between nice turns there are rocks. Everywhere. I want to go skiing, but it's just not worth it.

Nice photos theskier. Its a shame that more people don't take the time to be responsible and educate themselves about the dangers.

had 2" of fresh on the ground in Parker. It melted before it layered up. Did get some driveway turns, fell on me arse.

I hate you all. Skred, don't even start...

When I was told about this avalanche I wasn't surprised. I was more saddened that folks are letting "Powder Lust," get the better of their decision making and observational skills...

I have been thinking that this could be a very scary winter.... I have changed my mind, this will be a very scary winter.
