Dumbasses.
Should've selectively thinned and everyone knows you cut low with the chainsaw muffler down, just off the ground. _________________ conquistador of the useless |

At least they could have said EXACTLY where it is so I would not have to look for it! I mean, they went to all that trouble, the damage has been done, SOMEBODY might as well ski it!

Tools!
...that is, they would have been better off to work more slowly and with hand tools....and 60' clear cut, in avvy terrain?
That's just NUMB!
That will show if the October update to terraserver comes close enough to a snowfall. _________________ 2009-2010 = 7 - BC/3-P; 6 - BC/T; 9 - IB/T; 3 - IB XC .....that's a wrap! |

I was thinkin maybe 27 and 27....
Having cut swaths by hand and/or with chainsaws (on private/communal property) my main reaction is:

| It's interesting that there was a delay between the complaint and the arrests. They weren't caught up there with chainsaws in hand. So I wonder if that means that the police actually went up there and took a look? Would they arrest them if it wasn't total carnage up there? |

Some dipstick did the same thing near where I live in Utah. What was even better, he got the Boy Scouts of America to do it as a project so he could drive his ATV up to three lakes. The Forest Service caught him and it cost him over $200,000 to restore the trail. Too bad the piece of s--t could pay the fine. These two guys burn their as--s. All this does is make it more difficult for all of us to use both private and forest service land. |

| My question is WHY? What a stupid thing to do. Ski area tickets are cheap compared with the work of cutting your own ski area. Plus, then you still have to earn your turns. I can not even imagine skiing the same boring short run for a whole season??? |

This would have been lift-serviced, car parked at bottom. There are lots of trails like it in the east, where truly natural glades don't often happen to be off the back of ski areas.
I've skied my share of other folks' hard work with pruning shears. And saws. The better runs go really easy on the saws. The trees are nice to keep around. Better snow.
Which is why I wonder how badly they cleared things out. |

Well, the article said 60' by 1/4 mile. It's kind of hard to believe that they literally cleared that much forest, that they were that greedy and if they did, that they actually thought they'd get away with it. If they just took out a few saplings it wouldn't be such a heinous crime. Maybe they really suck at tree skiing? _________________ conquistador of the useless |

I was up on jay for the jay challenge cheering a friend on and saw the carnage - its absolutely ridiculous, you will have no problem finding, in fact you will likely be able to drive a car down it, these goofs have likely f'ed up the drainage now and I wouldn't be surprised if in heavy rain over the years this ends up totally shitting up big jay
they (state forest dept) did hike it to assess the carnage, they also did the investigation, and it isn't to hard in these parts to find two knuckle heads bragging in a bar about destroying state land
the sad part is it didn't need to be done - if it can't be cleared with shears and a bow saw there is no need to ski it |

The really dumb part is that Big Jay is probably the most high-profile off-piste car shuttle destination in the state. Not only are there plenty of natural lines already, but something of that magnitude was sure to be spotted pretty quickly.
I've seen plenty of overzealous line clearing on state land on Camel's Hump and in the Notch, but 60 feet wide is just ridiculous. |

This is a sad reality- I was hoping it was just a 'thinned out' 60' swath. Hopefully Big Jay being f-ed won't be the case, and maybe they'll plant some saplings to try to make it right. It will probably get wind scoured anyway, and if not it will get loaded and slide-prone. They ought to make these gapers clean up our forests for a long time. Perhaps they'll even teach them the proper ethics of cutting for BC skiing and have them do some appropriate thinning in other locales....or maybe they'll just introduce them as 'The Big Jay Cutters' at a Mad River Glen work day and really throw them to the wolves. |
