|
|
I just had a shop mount my Hammerheads on a new pair of Karhu Jak BCs (172 cm). The bindings were mounted around 3/4" farther forward than they were formerly mounted on my Tua Crossride 110s (178 cm). Can anyone tell me how to determine the proper mounting location on my Jaks. I am excited to ski on them, but want to wait to see if they are mounted correctly.
Thanks!!!!!!

Jaks have a specific mark on the ski to mount and that mark will be a bit farther forward than a traditional ski due to the kick in the tail. The shop proabaly mounted on that mark and the mark I believe is boot size specific for the 06 skis. _________________ Just Say No To Groomed Snow |

| I thought the same thing so I emailed Mitch and Tim. They said they have always mounted their bindings on their Jaks by determining chord center as measured in a straight line from the ski tip to the end of the ski's running surface at the tail--- in other words that point where the upturned tail begins to leave the surface of the snow. Then they mount the bindings with the pins about an inch forward of this chord center. I followed their advice and I am very happy with the results. |

| Thanks for the reponses. It sounds like they're mounted just fine and now I can just go ski! |

I'm about to attempt my very first Hammerhead mounting on my new 06/07 Kahru Jak skis later tonight. Boy these skis are wide!
My big question - where do I place the HH template?
The Jak ski has several lines marked on it.
The primary-looking one is labeled something like "Alpine/Touring center". I'll take their word for it, even though this doesn't 'look' like it is at the actual ski centerline, instead it seems further back (closer to tail) than where I'd guess the centerline would be.
But then forward of this centerline, are several lines each marked "Mondo Boot size 23.5 – 26.5" (etc) where each line appears an inch ahead of the other in a progression (the bigger the boot, the more forward).
Should I use this "boot size" line (that matches my boot) as the actual 'centerline' when placing the HH plastic template on the ski? If it is a choice, what difference does it make in ski performance? What would the average/typical mounting be? Which did you use? FWIW - during demos I liked the HH neutral #3 position but did not like most-active #5 one (felt 'unnatural' to me, where I'm currently on SuperLoops).
Any tips or voices of experience would be greatly appreciated - I don't want to screw this up! :-)

PS- The shop recommended I use Gorilla glue, a water-proof wood glue. I'm heading to the hardware store at lunch to look for it. Or would any regular wood glue I already have at home (Elmer's, etc) also be equally as good? |

DeepTele... You have 2 options...
Option 1) aka. Easy
What is your Mondopoint size (stand so that your heel touches the wall, and measure to the tip of your longest toe... in CM, round that up to the next 0.5 CM... That is your MONDOPOINT-size)? Use the sticker-line as your pinline from the template (ie. use the correct "range"... eg. so for Mondo 26.5, use the second sticker).
Personally, I'd just mount like that (and did mount my Jak BC's like that, seemed to work well).
Option 2) aka. Mount lika an alpineski
Measure the bootsole of your teleboots (ie. straight line from the pins to the end of the sole at the heel), then divide that by 2 (ie. boot-sole center). Now mark the pinline on the ski, by adding the half-bootsole forwards from the AT (alpine) boot-center... And use that line as the pinline from the template...
Option 3) aka. modified Option 2).
Search, about kazillion opinions on how to mount...
In short, use the sticker and what Karhu recommends... They do know what they are talking about...
But, check the distancies... As there seemed to be some problems wiht placing the stickers...
Here's the correct measurements:

Lots of discussion already on glue or no glue, what kind of glue, etc. Gorilla Glue (polyurethane) foams up and is not the best bet. Actually, I haven't found any use for which is is better than other glues. I use waterproof wood glue (Titebond II or III), regular wood glue won't stop moisture penetration. Epoxy is better, but make sure to work it into the holes.
The A/T center mark is for boot center. I presume (haven't looked at those skis) the other marks are for the pinline, which varies depending on boot size. |

Edit:
I have the 05/06 Kaks mounted with HHs. Originaly the bindings were mounted pin-line after the suggestions by Karhu but this was way to forward for my taste. Worked perfectly inbounds, but it gave me a ridiculous amount of back-ski which was a serious problem in pow. I ended up moving the bindings 2 inches backwards and now I'm all happy.

Bingo... and since your bootsize affects the effective bootcenter while you're skiing... hence they made 3 steps for different sized boots to get the most out of the skis.
Freedans CB/CRS works as well... But lately I've just mounted according to bootcenter (Doh, I don't have a single tele-ski in the quiver ), or perhaps eyeboling it a bit and mounting a few mm back from it... Seems to work with me and the skis I have... Also makes life a lot easier... _________________ I may be a JONG, but atleast I know a get more days on snow than you... NOT |

I found the suggested line for tele boot size mounting to be pretty much dead on for a pins on chord center mount on my Jills...same ski just lighter ... after skiing them I moved them back a cm. (I't still not my favorite ski) _________________ let me stand next to your fire |

My take on mounting the HH is that the binding itself acts as a giant lever, so I take into account the length of the binding "block" and the center ball of foot.
I mount my HH with the center running mark between holes four and five. In other words, if you mark your binding halfway between holes four and five; five being the hole closest to the heel, then mark your CRS on the ski, then line the two marks up. This ends up putting the boot center behind the alpine boot center mark. BOF at CRS will also work.
If you think of the pressure applied by an alpine boot versus a tele boot, it makes sense that we'd split the difference between pin line and boot center, since we do ski with the front of one boot and the whole of the other.
As to the lines that ski mfds place on their skis. Would you trust these marks if you knew that a guy making minimum wage was making those marks by the thousands? How about if the guy making those marks was from a different country and was making less than a dollar an hour and had never skied in their life. Now add in the fact that Karhu messed up the markings on a bunch of skis. As for me, I dont' trust no ones marks but me own!
Go with the center running surface, it will not lie, even on an asymetrical ski. |

Titebond for glue sounds like a good and easy answer.
Where to place the binding seems a little more problematic.
I checked out the other thread... it seems most people feel the Karhu mondo pin-lines are way too forward. It took some digging to discover that CB/CRS stands for Center Ball / Center Running Surface. (I found a good description at http://www.telemarktips.com/BindingMt2.html).
I'm still processing everything I've read. So far I'm leaning toward using the inner-most pin-line, while also doing the CB/CRS measurements to see where they come out on the ski (sounds like it'll be close to the inner pin-line). Several posts wondered if Kahru made their pin-lines based on in-bounds groomers. Well I'm on the east coast and do mostly lift-service so far, where I want the Jak for our ungroomed 'powder' days here such as at Mad River Glen. (Last week in the foot of freshies at Wildcat my Atomic TM22's sunk very deep). Perhaps the Kahru inner pin-line wouldn't be so far off for east coast powder days at MRG?
Tonight I'll check the sticker lines against the Kahru correction, then see how that jives with the CB/CRS measurements, then correlate that to the HH mounting instructions. If it all makes sense, then I'll go ahead with the drilling. If not, I'll pop back in here tomorrow to share my confusion.
Thanks for the feedback so far and especially the Kahru pin-line sticker corrections. Gives me some degree of increased confidence where I'm not some guy alone in his cellar trying to figure this out own his own. :-) |
