So we went to a friends house last night to soak in the hot tub and drink some wine. Dana says, "Gee this would be nice to have at the new house." Idea Very Happy

So what is the collective wisdom of the great Ttips universe? Our back deck will be ~ 18' x 10'.

In my opinion, there are not many toys that a household can have that give greater pleasure than a hot tub. It spans all age groups, sexes, left wing, right wing...

To me, the question would be how to heat it...go with electricity (have seen several people say it costs them around 1 dollar a day over all) or with wood....is there gas fired? Is a pellet stove a viable option?

What caught my eye recently was the whole cord wood construction...using small wood rounds and bottles, held with morter to make things like saunas and such....looks neat.

gotta have it.
The 8 of us bought one for our college house ( Very Happy sketchy!) cost us $400 I think out of the classifieds. When we moved two years later we sold it again, for $400.
The electric bill was horrendous though, better with a proper cover, and we had to drain and clean it pretty much weekly with the parties...... Wink
but, definitely worth the investment.

I probably only use my hot tub 8-10 times a week, year round. Buy one out of the classifieds for 40-50 cents on the dollar. It's well worth any extra electricity costs, and you will get your money's worth.

If you'll use it, go for it, we love ours.

In the winter I hot tub at least once daily. Usually twice. it's my afterwork and post excerise ritual. the outdoor tub furing winter is sweet if you've got a dog who likes to play fetch! I love cheering the girl on and throwing sticks/balls for her while sittin' in my 104°F H2O!

The older I get the more I like the tub. I've had it for four years and all I've had to do was put water in it.

Go for low maintanance and you'll enjoy it more:

Acrylic
Small - smaller than you think ~110 gallons
-allows you to empty it easily and refill it quickly to get rid of the chemical soup called water
-most (all) of the time it will be just one or two of you in it
-cheaper to run
220 volts
Consider a chemical free system, I know they are out there I just haven't used them
Put it outside so it doesn't destroy the room its in w/condensation

Go for it....great after skiing and fall bike rides !! I've got access to one at my Snowbrook place and I've been thinking of putting one on my deck down here in MA. I've been told I'll need to reinforce my deck to do that.
