We've been playing on some new skis, and I thought I'd offer some initial impressions.

186 Dynastar Legend Pro is a great ski. The 97 waist takes care of business in the pow pow, the moderate-stiff flex and damp feel destroy crud, and the torsional stiffness of the traditional construction carves it up. They are surprisingly easy to short turn and very much at home taking big arcs. Smooth ride. To date, these are the best all-around skis I have tried. Longer wouldn't be a bad thing with these skis, but unfortunately I think the 193 version is only 89 at the waist. Skis from waterdude's quiver.

185 Volkl Karma. Turn, turn, turn. These are stable and fun skis that feel like little trampolines that zip, carve, and boing around the mountain. They are great fun in the bumps and can easilly range into the firmest of snows. They don't quite have as much float as I would have expected, but they are still fun in soft snows and capable in chop and crud. Overall, they are good at most everything, but maybe not great at anything specific either. Skis from cowdog's quiver.

186 DB Tabla Rasas. Still waiting...

Pro Riders: the 186 are 97 underfoot. the 194 are 90 underfoot. most articles/reviews/web sites don't spell that out and it drove me nuts for a while. My understanding is that the new version will be 97 in both lengths.

I've got the 186. I have yet to get 'em in their element but I can say this is one hot ski even on the hard pack; suprisingly quick edge-to-edge. I've mostly skied 'em standing up so far. They just don't feel right to me tele but maybe I've just got work at it some more. I think they're a bit stiff for tele but maybe that's just me. I love this ski!

Yeah, the 186 is 97 waist and the 193 is 89 waist. The Dynastar site and many magazine reviews, as mentioned, haven't got that straight. Hopefully they make the 193 with the 97 waist, but all the latest 193 versions I have seen only have the 89 waist. Gotta love the orange too.

Basically, I think the 186 Legend Pro is an excellent tele ski. I would love a pair. Fun, fun skis.

OK DB, now bring on the Tablas!

Any experience with the Dynastar Legend 8000 as a tele ski? The listed weight, 3410 grams for the 172 length, is pretty light for a mid-fat alpine ski, making me think it might be good for tele. The alpine SKIING and SKI reviews (for what they're worth) describe it as a fun, lightweight ski that's easy to toss around.

Caleb.
It is absically the same as the 74 of the last 2 years and I know is an awsome, strong teleski that is good fantastic both on and off the piste.
Rock on and ski Dynastar.

I was just checking out the new Pro Riders at the shop this evening and the 186 and 194 had pretty much the same waist width. The 194 was maybe a tad thinner, but only about a mil or two. Are these maybe the "new" 194's?
Oh yeah and the 194's have a cool looking metal tip protector too.
Had to wipe the drool off 'em when I was done. Smile

Thanks for sharing your impressions. I find it interesting you describe the LPs as "moderate stiff". I wonder how the Legend 8800s would compare because I've been moving up the stiffness scale (Sumos-CR 112-Legend 8800) and each time it has been for the better in a way I can only describe as incredible.

I am wondering if the 194 is just the same as last years and they have just covered the old ones with a new design. That ski was a hand full for most and may have not sold too many!!! And the in the making of the shorter ones they did what everyone was asking! A shorter fatter ski as I know this to be true. The size of the LP 194 is the same as last years.

OK, so after getting really confused over the dimensions of the 194 pro riders, I did a little research and here's the deal.

Up to October 2004:

186 124-97-116
194 117-90-109

October 2004 to present:

both sizes 124-97-116

Sweet.

Yep! That's what I heard too about the most recent offerings. Didn't want to joust with scottyrottan about it but I had it from a pretty good source. BTW, if you don't mind parting with the $$$, these are one sweet ski.
