Help me out here, oh those of the fat revolution...

I have been on CR110's for 3 seasons. I'm looking to get some fatties with my recent windfall. I just don't know what to get or how fat to go.

I was thinking I could use the 110's for harder snow and have a fatter pair for pow and crud.

I can get some Powder Birds or Kungurs for around $300, but is that going fat enough? Since it won't be my only ski, should I go even fatter?

The Powderbird is 83mm under foot, which I would call an all around ski. Go fatter. Cool

Or not, just have fun.

Go ~100mm at the waist.

Seriously.

I think the 190's are a little long for me.

Seriously.

At least mid 90's for sure.

But be prepared to never get on the 110's ever again. Wink

Fair enough, maybe the 176s or 183s then. I think jgarrison was selling or trading a pair of 176s on TeleTurnAround too. What length are you looking for?

I agree with 100 at the waist or close to it is what you should go for.
I was just drooling over these Line Prophets on tele-turnaround, I'm not sure of exact dimensions.
Had i not just picked up King Salmons from Tri-U and Voile Insanes last season I would be all over those skis.

Looks like the Insanes that were being cleared out for $349 on the Voile site are gone but perhaps an email to MC might get you some info on where to pick some up if you were so inclined. I know most don't like the graphics but those skis are by far the funnest ski I've ever been on. Sweet, sweet, sweet turning fat ride that puts a perma-grin on everytime I ski them!!!!!!

My 110's are 185s and seem about right. I'm 6'3" 200lbs.

You could probably drive the 190s, they're not super stiff. Or, the shorter ones would be easier to throw around in the trees. Depends on your choice of terrain I'd imagine.

Ok, you guys have me looking at 100mm waist skis now. I'm going to demo Sick Birds Sunday.

Hmmm, these Line Prophets (133/100/124mm) are intriguing. Anyone skied them tele? Would these be similar to a Jak or stiffer?

As far as I know, the only differences between a Prophet 100 and a Jak Team Ed. are the topsheets and the inserts. Somebody else who knows better might be able to confirm or deny that.

I had a chance to take a couple runs on the Teams last weekend, and my initial impression pretty much matched what Karhu says about them - they're a bit stiffer than the regular Jaks.

What everyone else said - go phat.

Those CR110's will be a fine addition to the ski fence/porch bench project. I have any number of now perfectly worthless skis in my garage to add to that project as well.

Maphead, (sorry, I meant to respond to your PM about this earlier!)

If you go for the G3 Reverend you'll recognize almost everything about it from your 110 Crossrides -- the energetic rebound (though the Rev is of course softer), the excellent edge hold, the versatility. At 93mm in the waist the Reverend probably would take over your quiver for all but the firmest days. 93 is just conservative enough to not be too much of a liability on frozen corn or long traverses.

But in deciding how far into the "powder/crud ski" domain you want to go, realize that anything in the low 90s will simply be left behind by the 100+ models on real powder days and also on days with the deepest corn/slush. Even the difference between old 97mm Jaks and my Big Stix 106 was very evident in those conditions. Wider skis give you more and more freedom from drag in soft snow since they give you more control over when, where, and how you float and sink. They're also great secret weapons when skiing a mixture of snow and underbrush!

I'm way into my Big Stix 106 (which has been renamed the Prohete starting this season) and at 200 pounds you'd have no trouble skiing the 190cm version, though you could also pick up 180s for a lighter weight experience.

I do like the Jak Team Edition (and its sibling the Prophet 100) but I don't particularly care for their extra wide and extra high tails. There's a ski for next year called the BC 100, a 100mm version of the Jak BC -- imagine the Jak Team Edition with less tail and with some metal replaced by carbon fiber. Nice. But don't wait for next year since you're looking for a bargain.

If you're okay with less sidecut (i.e. a ski that really prefers a bit more of a long/open turn) you might really enjoy the Black Diamond Verdict. I've had a great time on it in several different conditions from mush to Wasatch pow. At 200lbs you should be fine on the 190 but the 180's also not out of the question.

My quiver was a pair of 185 CR110s, then I added the 188 soft BRO Model to it this winter. I'm keeping the 110s for ice and groomers, but the fatter pair is a lot of fun in powder and crud -so stable.

Because of the twin tip the running length is about the same as the CR110. But the BROs are more lively and fun in most conditions. A ski in similar dimensions would probably suit you well.
