S'bowl was ....interesting today. For all the stress getting up there (80 opened in plenty of time - a little after 5 AM I think; but 50 stayed closed for a while - downed power lines?), it wasn't any where near snorkle depth. Very wind impacted. Did get my screamer in on Disney's east face though. Twas good.

Heav was outstanding today and the storm total of 35"(24hr) seemed pretty accurate as the off piste was atleast that deep and maybe deeper in the wind burms. the drive from Washoe Valley thru Carson City was not easy tho as last nite it rained quite a bit before the snow hit so 395 was glazed and slick but it was Baaab's turn to drive so great to be hauled up to Tahoe with our cars safely tucked away in the garage. Anyway, butt cold and windy and we stayed in the trees off Northwoods chair and did a lot of high traversing and were rewarded with untracked and deep powder. Later on we did venture into the trees off Dipper chair and finished with tree runs off the new Olympic chair. Harpo from So. Shore joined us with some local knowledge and he stepped up our old folks pace. So, best resort day so far this season and maybe a couple of seasons. For the out of town visitors, give the Heav a try, personally I think it spanks Kirkwood for finding untracked snow many hours after the snow fall. _________________ Just Say No To Groomed Snow

I'm with dirtbag. Nasty thick cement under the gondola. Go elsewhere.
Glad to hear you're enjoying the Heave this year QZ. When we get this deep low elevation snow, it is as good as it gets around Tahoe - if you know where to go.
Here's a front porch question for you QZ. Have people been hitting the Slide Mountain to Bowers Mansion line this year? That's the only thing out there that is comparable (vert wise) with our Heave to Gville runs here on the South shore. _________________ Viva La Nina

Obviously there's been a bunch of snow lately so that run is getting ripe or ready. However, I look up there with my Binocs all the time and haven't seen any tracks yet, but that was before the latest fronts and the Mt. has been socked in for the past week. We haven't done that run in maybe four years as recent seasons have had high elevation snow but boney below 7,000'. This year the snow line is a lot lower. Personally I am afraid to be the first to drop that line until I have personally talked to someone who has as once you commit there is no place to hide if the conditions are slidable or boiler plate. A few years ago we were skiing the steep gulley to the South of that run and it was firm, the guy above me slipped and started sliding and cut me off my feet as well and we were both riding each other like a sled and fortunately I was able to grab a small pine tree before our speed got too fast but it was a close call. I have never skied that run again. Anyway, I will get some beta and send you a pm. That run is the closest thing to Alaska around here and a easy car shuttle. On another note, as were were driving out today at the bottom of Kingsbury, there was a group of kids hitching back up the mountain and obviously had poached the Garderville run. _________________ Just Say No To Groomed Snow

Alpine was pretty freaking swell today. Lots of tracks to be laid even at the end of the day. Snowed almost all day but windy and white out. I guess the 80 closure helped with the crowds. It did snow almost 2 ft overnite at our place in Tahoe/Donner.
Skied Kirkwood today it was the best Kirkwood has been in two years. But did hear a siren go off at about 3pm. Someone said that it was the avalanche siren and that an avalanche had occurred in the palisades. Which had me conceded because are last run was in the palisades at about 2:30pm. Does anyone have more info on that happened? _________________ May your tips run ture, your flask be full, and your dope be fast. LONG LIVE LONGBOARDS!

what day did you hear the siren (sunday or monday?)
Thank for the the info on TGR. When i was out there today at 2:15 -2:30 we only saw one group of two telers in the palisades. and then saw them at the bottom so thats good. tried to call a friend who is on ski patrol but got his voice mail. hope the 3 is not ture. _________________ May your tips run ture, your flask be full, and your dope be fast. Good advice on that one. I skied the first steeper chute (skiers left) today and the 1ft on top of smooth rock slab all slid off. Then when i was past the rock, a nice 1 ft crown broke and slid. All was good and we were safe and watching each other, but we decided to traverse out of the bowl for today. I think the older layer was more consolidated/smooth in the bowl due to sun exposure (guess). In the trees it seemed to be less of an abrupt transition between layers.
I skied in that general area for the first time on Saturday morning with colleagues, but I'm not sure I can understand your "skier's left" above. We skinned from the pullout west of Grass Lake moving roughly slightly east of south to the subpeak (Powderhouse?) NW of Waterhouse Peak. When we prepared to ski down, my colleague who knows the area warned us to stay skier's left of a deep NNE gully with several visible hazards. Is that the bowl in question? The snowpack in the trees felt quite well bonded and stable, providing excellent turns high up with a bit of a wet crust on the lower third. There several other parties climbing or descending at the same time as us, but we didn't cross many tracks on the way down. The skin track was packed and slick.
It must have changed totally since then...

Wow, that's crazy about the consecutive inbounds avy's at kwood! Glad everyone is (relatively) OK.
Nice pics SF, was wondering how you guys fared.
Couple notes from Tahoe this weekend and today. I haven't been to Heavenly in probably 10 years. Went with some locals, and I gotta agree it's pretty kickass (questioning the kwood pass now...). Though I was starting to wonder when I got out of the car and saw all these steezed-out bros listening to their thumping hip-hop. But the gaper-fest is actually quite amusing. gimpy I think we saw your tracks to Gville on Sat. We were sooo wanting to hit that but didn't have the shuttle situation figured out. Set it up on Sunday, and then... they closed the lift. Doh! Still lots of great runs and great snow.
Got stuck there last night (damn non-4WD!), so stayed over, did some work this AM, then headed out around 2. A little after 3 PM, did a late afternoon lap on Waterhouse/Powderhouse/wherever the skin track went, and it was amazing pow! Tomorrow AM would be a killer time to get this, skin track is in, cold temps, not many tracks...
Snowpack seemed bomber in the trees, and DEEEP. A little windblown on the exposed areas up top but that's about it. Took my time getting up there because I was on slowshoes. I didn't want to walk in the skin track, but it just wasn't happening at all outside of it. The Verts didn't look like they were actually doing much to the skin track, so I hiked it. Asked one of the skiiers who passed me if I was messing up the track for him and he said not at all, so I kept going (trying to "replace my divots" if I punched thru etc.). Suffice it to say, I was missing the splitboard. At the top ready to drop in around 5 PM, and it was around 10 deg F. Just then, another guy showed up at the top, so I figured I'd wait and head down with him. Turns on the way down were $$$$, but I was worried about getting stuck (don't fall, hard to get up in all that pow!) and running out of light, so maybe didn't get full enjoyment out of them... but damn that was nice pow! Go Git Sum (tm) tomorrow!

The Chutes at Rose were very fun yesterday. A skier and I were the first down what I think is "Hornet's Nest" when it opened. and we caused a huge sluff to run down several hundred feet. Kinda scary for inbounds - definitely could have buried somebody. We both got off to the side and let it pass, but it still pushed hard on my legs and buried me up to my crotch.
