I think Mitch Weber and Telemarktips has done more than anything else in recent memory to promote the safe and enjoyable use of the backcountry. Specifically, I am convinced that he has given a vast army of people a new-found knowledge of avalanches, and dramatically increased the knowledge level of many others. This not only saves lives, but it makes the backcountry we all love so much more enjoyable.

Some of the proof of these statements undoubtedly lies in the WEB-site statistics that are being recorded. But for knowing the real benefit, we will have to wait until we all get to that great powder mountain in the sky, and ultimately find out how many people lived to ski another day.

Mitch's contribution in creating not only an avalanche safety forum but a broader forum allowing discourse on any number of equipment, destination, etc. of issues and interests has been enormous. In my view he has practically invented the internets Wink Well maybe that's an overstatement. What he has done is brought together a vast number of individuals (from diverse locations) into a community for exchange of all types of information and camaraderie. TTips is state of the art, extremely well managed, and gosh usually very friendly. Very Happy If it was anything else, I'd lose interest. Hat's off and a big HOORAH.

I have been remiss in communicating backchannel with Mitch recently about how I feel about his contribution. But I hope he knows my feelings haven't changed. Mitch, you add so much value to so many people's lives you are truly a mensch. Keep pressin' on bro'. And you know you always have a second home in Boulder whenever you are in the neighborhood. Kazumi feels the same as I do.

I think the forum is a great thing, but really, the avy eyes section on the main page could use some help.

Maybe we could all get together and help Mitch make that section better and more visible. It might give us an opportunity to actually work together on a common project that people can learn something from outside of the often bitchy context of overanalyzing each and every avalanche incident that catches our eyes and that we really know nothing about.

I'd volunteer to work on that a bit. Anyone else?

What time zone? Remember, there are now any number of European posters who are part of the community- for them, 7 pm Pacific Time is 3 am in the morning.

Amazing, huh?

It will be like a rolling wave of appreciation for Mitch, spreading out from East to West.

At 7PM Friday night, I will be ensconsed in the Wendy Thompson Hut, praying for snow with a snifter of brandy lifted up to honour MItch.

I'll certainly raise a glass.

I don't want this to come off as morbid curiosity, but do we have a hard number on how many Ttippers have been caught in avy's since this subforum started? I can only think of two. It would be one way to get a hard number on the effectiveness of the subforum even though there is no doubt in my mind it is greatly effective to some extent.

How about East to East, starting with Siberia, which has the honor of being the first snowy, mountainous country where a new day dawns.

Ahem... Japan, the land of the Rising Sun would seem to fit that bill. Wink

Let's give him the presidential medal of freedom! He can join esteemed others like Tenet of the CIA ... oh never mind. Very Happy

7 tonight it is! Hey Mitch, which is your favorite beer. I'll drink it for you tonight Smile

Yes, I've learned alot and its been fun. I know I am skiing terrain I never would have because now I'm able to assess it. Stay off when I need to and ski it when its safe.

There are so many of you to thank, but it's all because Mitch laid the groundwerk.

I stand corrected- and Kiran happens to be on my list of secondary favourites if Guinness isn't available.

Am I missing something here? Kamchatka, which is part of Siberia, is three time zones ahead of Japan in getting the sun. Even though Japan is "The Land of the Rising Sun" its sun rises three hours later than Kamchatka's.

I think AB was swayed by the promise of a good Japanese Kirin!!
