Alright PDXers, meet Kris, Portland's latest backcountry skier:

On Tuesday I took her on her first ski tour up to Camp Muir. Kris nearing Glacier Vista. The Muir snowfield and Camp Muir are upper right:

Uh, there are crevasses on the Muir snowfield?

Clouds in the valley:

We started skinning (Kris's first time skinning) above Pebble Creek. Kris with the Tatoosh in the background:

Kris almost to Camp Muir. The upper mountain was capped by clouds almost all day:

We rested at Camp Muir then headed down. Kris cruising down

Hiking down from Pebble Creek:

Below Pebble Creek we put our skis back on and skied to where the trail turns away from the mountain to Paradise.

Kris did a wonderful job. Getting to Camp Muir (which is a 4600vft day), is a pretty formidable first ski tour (especially in July).

Edit: Oh wait, I guess I should say something about snow conditions. The snow is discontinuous until above Pebble Creek, but with a few creative portages you can stay on your skis for pretty long. Snow was well consolidated, but bumpy and sticky in places.

Welcome back from Idaho Brian!

Okay so, I talked about not skiing again in July, but I changed my mind. Yesterday Aaron (who had his hall pass for the SW Chutes last Sunday revoked) and I did Snowdome. The northside of Mt Hood yesterday morning from hwy 35--still decent coverage:

After the approach, Aaron at the base of the 'dome:

All the volcanoes were out:

Aaron gets to be the photo victim for this TR. He is not as attractive as the last victim, but he is more obnoxious. Aaron with the cracks of the Eliot:

Aaron descending from the top of the dome:

Aaron skiing by the crevasses he almost skied into last year:

Aaron did manage to get a photo of me:

We headed down the Langille bowls to the Timberline trail. Aaron in the first bowl:

A short portage ensued between the 1st and 2nd bowl, but from there the snow was continuous all the way to the Timberline trail. Aaron again:

There's mild suncupping on the dome, and larger cups in the Langille bowls. The Timberline trail back to Cloud Capp was a very pleasant hike:

Hiking the Tline trail was a nice contrast after the snow-covered RTM trail around Adams.

I've got a lot of summer projects to catch up on (and there’s talk of mountain biking in my future), so I'm probably not going to ski anymore this month. I do hope to hook up with you all for beers at some point (generally any day but Thursdays work for me). Cheers everyone and enjoy summer,

Jeff

Shocked he said it in public folks, we have to hold him to this! Cool

on a slightly similar note (related to consumption of beers!), I finally finished up my afghanistan reports and need to celebrate! (I forgot to bring along the last bottle of my porter on this idaho trip so it needs to be comsumed)

looks like snowdome might be a good option this weekend! most likely a day trip on sunday but that has yet to be determined. who wants to join me for a climb and some turns followed by some homebrew porter (all I have left is a 750mL bottle so we'd have to share that and suplement with additional beverage). I'd love to have as many of the PDXers around for some sort of trip like this as finishing up this project is a big deal for me...I lost three holidays, many many ski days and a huge chunk of sanity over this thing Cool

thats all for now....

Shocked Shocked I don't believe I read this. Jeff, are you feeling feverish? Wink

Wednesday night will be a good gettogether as well as Thursday. As long as I get my mountain bike ride in after work. I could gettogether tomorrow night perhaps. Anybody want to get into the groove to mainline Forest Park afterwork this summer?

Brian: I am heading up to Adams. I want SW Chutes before it goes bone dry at the bottom. I'll probably just go up there and see who's going down it.

sorry gwen, no adams for me! other than a day trip for skiing my main goal for this weekend is the "green truss" section of the White Salmon River (at least I'll be hanging out in melted snow from Adams!)

as for beers this week, tonight I an unpacking, cleaning gear and cleaning car...if you want to stop by with beers and help I certainly won't object! tomorrow I will be in a boat most of the evening. wednesday works for beers! thursday kinda works, but I have to bail no later than 9:30!

Nice to see that Aaron finally got his hall pass, GJ. Looks good, but not as good as your trip with Kris - were you sore enough to require the tender ministrations of a certified Physical Therapist? Wink

Anyone thinking about Adams this weekend?

We are contemplating it and were just curious if anyone had any useful information. Anyone know anything about that adventure race happening up there this weekend?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts

Alembical and anyone else contemplating it, I think you guys should go do it! I bet the rain we got yesterday smoothed things out and made it a touch nicer.

What about Saturday?

And what about beers? I missed Gwen's call last night because i was lost mountain biking somewhere in Post Canyon

how about tonight? Gwen, BJZ, et al., if you're up for beers tonight, let me know.

almost forgot....I NEED A HUGE FAVOR FORM SOMEONE IN PDX!

an aquaintance from NY is bringing her kid out to hood this week for a ski camp and is looking to ski and paddle some time next week. if anyone thinking of heading out mid-week to ski next week that wouldn't mind taking her along? also, she can borrow some of my skis but would probably be better served by something a bit longer (yep, I know, I'm short)...is anyone willing to load out a pair for a few days?

thanks much!!!
