I don't think they have announced who started the Waldo Canyon fire yet. However, there is a video from a mt. bike company that shows the start of the fire in the background and it certainly was not lightning.
The Springer fire was started by shooting a propane tank. Always a good safety moment |

Some of the fires in Utah were caused by "target shooting",
which according to the article could not be prohibited (while
a fire ban can be declared locally - a shooting ban would require the
legislature to act.)

| yup, i called state and fed forest service today. no cigs, no fireworks, no chainsaws after ten a.m. and you must carry 5 gallon of water, fire extinguiser and shovel to cut wood. guns? gun person on news- "as a target shooter if anyone started a fire, i'm sure they would feel badly." with a shrug. j |

It's wild to see these pictures and video! I worked as a wildland firefighter in Yosemite NP for two seasons and it was the proudest work I had ever done. One shift was 36 hours long. It was one of the hardest most incredible things I've ever done. I wear my Crew 9 shirts with pride these days and think of my fellow firefighters every summer. _________________ Running for my life |

Interesting for sure, and certainly smart on the part of the insurance companies.
I wonder if that might ultimately lead to arguments like those put forth by folks who opt out of the public school system and want vouchers to offset the costs of private schools for their kids? Seems like the same kind of issue, i.e. people don't think services paid for by taxes are "good enough" and want credit to use toward the system of their choice. Do these homeowners know they are getting this extra protection, or is it just something the insurer provides to protect their interest?
Probably a topic for another forum. _________________ A humble student at Fryingpan University. |

Finally some real sustained rain in Colorado, at least here in Breckenridge. Hopefully it's pretty widespread. _________________ Creeds and doctrines are like a raft to get you to the other shore and then to relinquish. Neither cling to the raft or reject it when drowning. Lightning without the rain this afternoon. Here's some shots I just took from just east of the home place. Rains or no rain, the low country is still tinder dry. We are at the mercy of the wind. Today, the wind was kind.

Air command was quick to show up:
Flames flared up:
The lead plane practiced the access line:
...and the safe exit line:
One more lap to practice the approach:
The Calvary arrives:
OMG!! IT'S THE SASKATCHEWAN AIR FORCE, EH!!
Thank you Canada, Thank you Saskatchewan!! Eh.
Follow the leader time:
Rock & Roll....money time:
Down, down, down...these guys rock:
Smoke eaters, God Bless 'em!
All in a day's work:
Chopper water dropper shows up:
Fill 'er up!
We may be dry, dry, dry, but at least there's water in the hood:
Rinse, repeat:

Nice pics, Mr. freeK! Looks like that turbo Commander doing the lead runs might be Canadian too. _________________ 私はスキー好む |

| Interesting trivia, that Saskatchewan fire bomber was once used as Air Force One during the Nixon years for smaller airports that couldn't land the bigger jet. Nice to see it performing something useful now. |
