"Dealt with"? How?

I think most/all of the remaining prisoners have been charged, finally.
Not sure if all of them have been charged.

Some (not charged, won't be charged) are/were dealing with repatriation issues, thus can/could not leave.

I understand there are still 169 inmates that still are not fully allowed their habeus rights. The argument to continue to deny them is that the inmates are so dangerous as to not deserve them. If they are so obviously dangerous, prosecution should be a piece of cake. Delays are not the friend of prosecution. What's the hold up? Try them and close Gitmo. Justice delayed is justice denied and all that.

edit: It appears almost 90 of the detainees were approved for release years ago, but still remain

Don't recognize 'Fair and Balanced' when you see it, SL?

This is probably the most disappointing aspect of the Obama administration to date, for me. Gitmo should be closed and the detainees either dealt with in a legal manner or released. The victims of 9/11 and their families deserve trials of those accused so they can once and for all, put their loved ones to rest. There is no doubt that there are some seriously bad guys detained at Gitmo. Let's get justice and move on.

You must be shitting me....the MOST disappointing ?? Shit, I think it's the only bright spot.

As far as I know, the detainees are being dealt with.

Wasn't it just a few years ago, most of you guys were claiming all the folks held down there were merely innocent victims swept off the streets?

If I can give Obama credit for anything, it's listening to his advisors and keeping this facility open.

This, BTW, is just the latest example of how SL responds in kind to a serious post from someone who didn't flame him. Invective and strawmen. But hey-- we're all just making him do it.

There was a "serious" discussion several years ago in here about how most of the Gitmo detainees were "innocent goat farmers". Own it.

Willy, would you agree that "innocent goat farmer" and "dangerous terrorist" are nothing more than unsubstantiated allegations until there is a fair trial ?

He doesn't believe in the legal system.

Really? So that makes SL's characterization of Grant accurate?

Guilt by extremely tertiary association... why do you come up with such implausible excuses?

Well some were innocent, but not necessarily goat farmers. The Telegraph (a right wing British paper) reports on some of the wiki leaks disclosures.

Quote:
The files detail the background to the capture of each of the 780 people who have passed through the Guantanamo facility in Cuba, their medical condition and the information they have provided during interrogations.

Only about 220 of the people detained are assessed by the Americans to be dangerous international terrorists. A further 380 people are lower-level foot-soldiers, either members of the Taliban or extremists who travelled to Afghanistan whose presence at the military facility is questionable.

At least a further 150 people are innocent Afghans or Pakistanis, including farmers, chefs and drivers who were rounded up or even sold to US forces and transferred across the world. In the top-secret documents, senior US commanders conclude that in dozens of cases there is “no reason recorded for transfer”.

It's too bad Obama hasn't done anything to clean up that mess.

Oh but he has. The Obama administration has demonstrated unprecedented ferocity towards whistleblowers.

I didn't characterize Grant.

Wiki says:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Guantanamo_Bay_detainees

Quote:
775 detainees have been brought to Guantanamo. Most of these have been released without charge. The United States government continues to classify many of these released detainees as "enemy combatants". As of April 2012, 169 detainees remain at Guantanamo.[7] As of December 2008, around 50-60 detainees have been cleared for release, but have not actually been released due to difficulties in repatriating them.[8] The unrepatriated include ethnic Uyghurs who were training to fight for independence from the Chinese government in Xinjiang province, and who are now wanted by the Chinese authorities.[8]

775 - 169 - dead - convicted = Do the math.

Most were apparently innocent.
Not so sure about them being goat farmers.
