This evening the 4 year old finally figured out he's faster in the water than the 10 year old. In the course of 3 days he went from being timid in the water to beating K to the stick and evading her attempts to dunk him while he swims back with it. He's connected with his amphibious Lab DNA. Smile

Labs and water

Hey dog people: any of you run with your dog? How much panting is too much panting do you think?

Now that it's HOT here (I mean today was maybe 75 degrees...) Daisy pants like nuts after a 20 minute session chasing the ball and after a couple miles of running her tongue is about 3 feet long.

SHe pants for 20 minutes at home, lying on her side like she might expire.

She's a very lean chocolate lab. No chub on this pup.

She always recovers just fine, but I'm wondering if excessive panting is a sign of something...other than being a hot dog.

running a dog dry in the heat is like running your truck low on coolant. i ride with my pup along the river and she is always wet from frequent dips. it's like turbo charging for dogs but she still pants after coming up the hill to the house. j

we've just been looking to freecycle a kiddie pool just for this reason (and for bathing her).

our runs are usually very "wet". frequent opportunities for dips in the seymour river or lynn creek or the ocean or.... but boy, she still pants.

(we're semi-dogsitting a dog with some horrid cancer at the moment. she's on heavy prednisone and it makes her pant all the time. it sounds like an old steam engine roundhouse around here...)

When your dog is panting, look at his tongue. If it is noticeably widened, he is at the threshold of overheating. Since panting is his way of cooling, the tongue flattens out, giving it the maximum surface area for cooling. Once it flattens out, he can do no more.

Since the other way they can cool is through the feet, at least get him off a hot surface (like pavement) preferable get his feet into some water, if you can't get the whole dog in the water.
