So are you going to catch the once in a lifetime experience?

Quote:
Back last year, as I was doing research on a very different subject, or so I thought, I came across an account of an expedition to Africa in 1882 to scientifically record the rare Venus transit of the sun. The head of that expedition was the famous astronomer, Antoine D’Abbadie, soon to become the President of the Royal Academy of France and perhaps the person responsible for the mysterious Hendaye Cross, so we might suppose that accurately tracking and timing the event was of the utmost importance, and not just to the scientific community. It was curious that someone connected to a mysterious monument, one that marked the time period of 1992 through 2012 as the season of catastrophe, should also be involved with an astronomical event that points to the same time period.

Every 122 or so years, the orbit of the planet Venus falls such that twice, eight years apart, Venus passes between our viewpoint on earth and the face of the sun. Precisely observing this event in 1882 allowed the astronomers to accurately forecast the next such pair of transits, in the summers of 2004 and 2012. And the first of those events, something that will be completely unique to those alive at just this moment, happened on June 8th, 2004.

The second transit will be in the summer of 2012, roughly six months away from the end date of the Mayan calendar and the helical alignment of galactic center. This once in a lifetime event, synchronizing with so many other cosmic alignments and portents, gives us a kind of certainty concerning the singular significance of our time.

Yeah, I'll check it out. Still have the mylar rolled up in the glove box from last month's eclipse.

a nice NASA video explaining the event.

So this thing happens every 120 years with two transits spaced 6 years apart.

Interesting history:

Quote:
On June 3, 1769, British navigator, Captain James Cook, British astronomer Charles Green and Swedish naturalist Daniel Solander observed and recorded the transit of Venus on the island of Tahiti during Cook's first voyage around the world.[1] During a transit, Venus appears as a small black disc travelling across the Sun. This unusual astronomical phenomenon takes place in a pattern that repeats itself every 243 years. It includes two transits that are eight years apart, separated by breaks of 121.5 and 105.5 years.[2] These men, along with a crew of scientists, were commissioned by the Royal Society of London for the primary purpose of viewing the transit of Venus. Not only would their findings help expand scientific knowledge, it would help with navigation by accurately calculating the observer's longitude. At this time, longitude was difficult to determine and not always precise.[2] A "secret" mission that followed the transit included the exploration of the South Pacific to find the legendary Terra Australis Incognita or "unknown land of the South."[3]

Here is a picture of it 6 years ago.

Better check it out this evening after 3pm pacific time, it will be your last chance until 2117.

For your reading pleasure.

By the grace of GOD this image is born.

It is RAW with sun spots and all, but it is nice for the Transit.

Cool

Well that is too bad. We had good observation conditions after a few clouds passed early in the phase. Although the clouds looked quite nice passing the transit sun. We had a portion of our little hamlet's population show up to take a peek in the scope we had setup. All were quite impressed and lots of "WOW Look at that" and "I've never seen that before"s. Smiles all around. Beautiful setting by the lake shore surrounded by the Colordo Rocky Mountains. Later we all had a look at the rings of Saturn at an unusual (for summer atmosphere) 350X. All in all a very nice way to spend the evening with community and friends chillin', grillin', and viewin'.

Cool
