fwiw, here's weil, a pop culture alt medicine dr, describing his change of heart about saturated fat:

http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA400919/Rethinking-Saturated-Fat.html

and another article he just recently published:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andrew-weil-md/processed-foods_b_1474570.html

in the butter vs olive oil. olive oil can have a short shelf life and the means of extraction can drastically affect the shelf life. olive oil also can have a fair bit of omega-6 fatty acids. with butter, you can geek out and start to read about the fat composition of butter being dependent on what the cows are fed....

Seriously, and back to topic, the question and discussion is very american, non fat or low fat milk on my cereal..and pizza with cheese makes me dizzy..

Americans consume on average 65kg of sugar per year. Norwegians 45kg. The recommended maximum is around 30kg. It really, really doesn't matter if you have low fat milk or (as we did in the US) half and half on your cereal or musli. We eat a lot of cheese, butter and cream and are all lean and strong. If you want to investigate problems, take a look at your cereal pack and youghurt! At Vons most cereals had around 50% sugar, and I mean sugar, not carbs. We need carbohydrates, but we need slow carbs. We don't need sugar, and we should also limit the amount of white flour.
Pizza s made wth sugar also in the US, I noticed!
Have to run.

Well that is clearly awesome. Dudes- I never said I thought if I picked the right milk then I can eat white carbs all day and live until 120. All I asked is whether lowfat or whole is the better choiuce when drinking milk. Man you ask which helmet might fit you best and you get 12 pages on why helmets make you more dangerous to yourself and the world . . .

I have been reading lately that some believe you should just go ahead and drink whole milk, because saturated fat is now good for you and reduced fat milk does not allow you to uptake the vitamins in it. And then I read, no, some saturated fat may be fine but too much is still bad for you and reduced fat milk does indeed allow you to get vitamins from it (including those added to it).

I personally don't drink milk because I'm not a baby (except for whole milk in my coffee), but my wife and teenagers do in cereal, 1%- should I be convincing them to switch to whole?
I say again, you shouldn't worry about milk or cream but their cereal.0Smile

well as mr. wright said:
mr wright wrote:
raw isn't ever the same thing as milk

there's a lot of internet information about the benefits and risks of drinking raw milk. for me, it's substantially improved my digestion. i usually can't drink milk w/o taking an acidopholous supplement (or drinking lactose free milk). this has not been a problem for me with raw milk. plus, i think it taste super freakin' good. (it's also super freakin' expensive).

i find it interesting about the cycling team that won (?) the RAAM a year or two ago, apparently raw milk was a primary component of their diet during the race.

another interesting note: the gov of norway seems to follow the trend in thought (like the US gov) that there's too much saturated fat in the world. according to the 2011 government report that i skimmed a few days ago, it is making attempts to reduce the intake of saturated fat in its populace. obviously, raggi_thor, you're not attending to that trend (neither am i).

cheers

If you tele, it's organic, local, non-pasturized and fermenting.

Laughing

Like the fuel in your vehicle - green, organic and local.

US diets/taboos/sterility have some odd twisted ideas about food that don't sync with longer established euro methods.

Personally I'm pretty hard core into decent yogurt, honey, raw oats. Sometimes mainstream cereal on top. But its not the kind of thing that a lot of US kids are going to be excited about.

All milks / soy / rice are fine with me. Generally prefer whole milk - tastes better.

I've been drinking fat -free cows milk for a while now.

Refreshing and milky tasty Razz ,
but when i was using skim-milk 1,5% i used to think it to be watery.

I particularily like the milk thats' from organic/humanely raised cows.

Only thing is in the spring/early summer ---- now Rolling Eyes
it makes my pollen allergies worse , so does cheese. Confused

I've been trying to cut down on it's use atm. by only adding it to my tea/coffee , but even that used up 1-2 glasses
(0.3 - 0.6 lit.) a day.

Long life the cows and other milk givers! Razz
And may they enjoy a healthy , low-stress and happy life while on planet earth with us. Razz

Moooooooo ..... Razz

Ketosis?

I will never attain this state and become a ridiculous ultra-athlete, and I don't think I should. Bravo for those who do.

What did you expect? This is the internet. There is probably some very good advice given as well as some very bad. How do you decide which is which? You end up back where you started.

Ha, ha.
After all this is telemarkTALK Smile
Try asking about binding placement, you'll get all the answers you need, just pick your choise, anywhere from two inches in front, through /the correct!) center of gravity, to three inches back, just pick your choice.

Now, your family DO pour the milk on their cereal, and you ARE asking about 1% low fat milk or whole milk, maybe 4%.
That's like asking about your elbow protection when skinning in bushes, and me asking you if you do wear a helmet when you ski downhill in rocky terrain, just to make sure.
A cup of milk, low fat or whole or half and half (cream+milk) is nothing to worry about. Seriously.
Sugar and white flour on the other hand, IS a big problem for MANY americans. Each meal of cereal, bread, pizza or ready made pasta sauce contains more sugar than a snickers. The problem is not the candybars we eat or the sugar we have in our espresso, but the sugar taht is added to practically all food. It's easy to become a sugar junkie, always hungry for more. NO sugar, a little more fat and otherwise whatever you want will be the natural first step towards "how to live longer and feel better" (Linus Pauling).
I lauphed when I saw a book called "the peanut butter diet", but then I realised, after a school trip with peanut butter jelly sandwiches for lunc (never been so hungry after eating), that the prblem with that lunch wasn't the peanut butter, but the jelly (80% sugar) and the crappy bread.
