EJH- why do you keep mentioning rolling terrain, skinning and whippets?
Like several others, he's trying hard to find disagreement.
Ya think?
I do like the crew who gets butthurt over people shitting on threads ignoring other posters protesting the shitting on this thread. It's like I called it at the beginning of this thread or something

Andrew, since you are here, let me ask you something, when you invented the things did you ever envision someone using them for front-pointing up a 20 foot cornice at the top of a 3,000 foot couloir?
Dave, I did more than envision it, I went out and field tested them myself to be sure of it.
Most interesting thing here is "Dave."
Ooh, finally a clue to the ID of the mysterious and always controversial "JPL." And ATA and "Dave" appear to know each other outside of Ttips. "SteveK," JPL expert to the white phone.

Or ask seki. I'm sure he's not too hard to find. You going to look for his facebook profile or something?
Careful if you look him up on LinkedIn-- it has a tendency to then suggest your profile to him as "someone you might know."
I've noticed you only give a shit when other people are being shat on if you think you can score e-cred points. It's one of your signature characteristics.
I'm sure ATA is entertaining. You've established repeatedly he's a bad skier

Oh... now you're dragging the first most worthless piece of gear into the discussion - ski crampons. Would you like a hemp rope or spare ski tip with those sir?

Nah, I don't think he's a bad skier, I'm pretty sure you're a bad skier, and I know Ron's a bad skier, but as for ATA, he's probably just one of those guys who tried tele a long time ago (see his ski resume) and as the technique and the gear got better he couldn't keep up with the pack, so he defaulted to AT. And he found himself a niche as the AT Apostle and as Mr. Extreme. More power to him. But it is amusing to finally see in the last PW film that, beyond simply getting down stuff, his skill level is barely above that of the average telemarker, who he's been deriding for what, nearly two decades?

Still the same old schtick
Post up your ski picks X-man. We're waiting. I think you've a very funny notion of "average" ski technique. [/b]

As tele gear and technique progressed it evolved into parallel turns at the ski resort.

Which is sad reflection on the "average telemarker" as I was skiing with my skins on, which admittedly is a stoned telemarker mistake.

A fine chuckle to start the day...

Oh yes, this was soooo obvious in the last PW film, where the telemarkers set the standard in AK and your Wasatch backcountry, etc., while the AT-ers hacked their way through every scene, for a taste scroll down to the bottom of this page. The AT-ers did look like they were having fun though, which I'm sure we agree is at least as important as looking good.

I've been meaning to ask you about that. I've never seen this happen before. How many bong hits does it take to not notice that you still have your skins on before even your first turn, and to not care enough (while being filmed by the PWs???) to stop and take them off?

A lot of good stuff here.

Funniest on topic thing on this thread.
The part about a Whippet being better than an ice axe for ski mountaineering is especially funny, followed as it is by gc’s later butthurting whine about generalizations made by others:

For my part, I agree with the points made here.

If you are going to be climbing slopes steep and firm enough to require crampons, and this can occur on even relatively mellow terrain on spring climb/skis where the snow is expected to soften in the warm sun for the descent, an axe is the most appropriate tool. Whippets are the most appropriate tools for skinning.
Yes, there is plenty of crossover in actual use, but crampons are such effective tools that it's really easy to quickly get yourself in over your head with them, past your ability to self-arrest, and that point is reached much faster with whippets than with an axe.
