grant -you can ride from downtown freeport to bradbury state park for some fun singletrack. the gritty's in freeport has a great deck to imbibe on post ride
not sure if popham is your choice for history, scarborough beach is closer to portland and about as good. if you head to popham, spinney's has a good lobster roll, head beach is usually way quieter if thats your goal

Got to say, as a Vermont beer drinker (Lawson's, Alchemist--hello!), I'm not sure you'll be all that impressed with Gritty's. Just my 0.2. But plenty of options abound.
Anyway, sounds like you have a wonderful vacation planned!
I haven't been to this location but I frequent their place at Sugarloaf and I doubt you'll be disappointed.
I'm sure you know what you're getting into in Freeport.....bring all your money ! _________________ "Take it from a member of the male species, walking around in public with an erection is somewhat of an embarrassment unless you are a bit..... off"........Bunion
If your schedule works out, you should consider taking in a Portland Seadogs game.
Excellent choice. It was basically downstairs from my office when we lived there.
@Grant, I'll get back to you with a list.
My kid lived in Portland when she first got out of college, so we got to know the city a little better when we visited her. My wife loves it there.......city-type amenities and and an hour and a half closer to Sugarloaf. It could be on the radar screen for a retirement location. _________________ "Take it from a member of the male species, walking around in public with an erection is somewhat of an embarrassment unless you are a bit..... off"........Bunion

Maine beer taste better with a tinge of salt water and beach sand left in your mouth
A box of Geary's Pale Ale, bushel of mussels and proper lobsters, no VT beer can wash that down the same way

salt water steamed, shelled, and swallowed on the beach GP
God I miss home
should add Grant - July 20-22 is the Yarmouth Clam Festival, will save you some time sampling the best of food from the casco bay region, if it coinsides with your visit

We're heading out next week and on the to do list so far:
Day 1 - mail ferry to Peaks Island, rent kayaks, tour around the bay
Day 2 - 1/2 day in Freeport to find bargains (ha!) and maybe continue to Popham State Park for the beach if the weather is right
Day 3 - walk around Portland, take in all the sights and eat like pigs! Head home.
We have 3 nights and 3 days. I think we'll leave the bikes at home. Hopefully we can ditch the kids for a meal at fivefifty-five one night. Otherwise, it will be Gilberts, J's, Salt Table and Grittys for meals.
Thanks for all the great feedback! _________________ Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for.

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions. We had a great time.
We first drove to Portsmouth as I had work there. We ate dinner at a friend's brother's restaurant - the Blue Mermaid, right next to the hotel.
The next day, while at my meeting, the girls went to the Strawberry Banke Museum.
Then we headed up I-95.
Our first meal was at J's Oyster House. Right on the water.
The following day was overcast, so we headed to Freeport and dropped some coin on this block.
We were told by a salesman at Horny Toad about a lobster shack in Cape Elizabeth. Great view!
The next day we hopped an early ferry to Peaks Island and rented some bikes. It was glorious.
We grabbed lunch on the deck of the Cockeyed Gull to enjoy the views back toward Portland. Fish tacos...mmmmm.
Wonderful boats on Casco Bay.
The kids headed back to the hotel while Mrs. Grant and I took a tour of the Shipyard Brewery. Love that stout, but no Pumpkinhead until Fall.
We even made it to a SeaDogs game where they beat the NH Fischer Cats 4-3.
While we didn't get to Five Fifty Five or the other upscale restaurants, we did find great pizza 'slabs' at Micucci's. Benkay Sushi was only okay though. Oh and as for other Maine beer, I tried the Baxter Brewing Celsius Summer Ale and Stowaway IPA really enjoyed them (in cans). _________________ Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for.
