Just about anything Richard Thompson does.

Have to go with the greatest living electric guitarist of all, the inimitable Jeff Beck. I'll throw my current vote for the intro to "Gets us all in the end" from Flash

Second place goes to the Human Riff Machine, Kieth Richards and "Can't you hear me knocking"

Rock on, all, rock on....

Hard to argue with RT.

That's pretty much exactly what ran through my mind when I read that.

I thought about this while riding today with a friend of mine who considers himself a music snob and "puts up" with FHV and I when it comes to music. I'll throw George Harrison out there. Especially the solo in "Let it be."

I'm sure there are dozens of others but looking forward to that contrast in "Let it be" with that soft build up and then George explodes the whole song. If you've heard the version with the organ solo instead of the guitar solo and been disappointed then you know how I feel.

A lot of great stuff presented in this thread, to which I add the following:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=old2pFY9owc

I have been a fan of Kimock's guitar work for nearly 20 years now. This video is of high quality and displays his talents quite well. Probably not quite in the category of "solo", but a worthy submission nonetheless, imnsho. If you want to cut to the shred, go to about the 7 minute mark; if you've got the time, enjoy the 10+ minutes.

cheers!

Pretty much anything by Derek Trucks, although even he seems to be in awe of Johnny Winter when they get together to play "Highway 61" on this video. It's cool to see a person who's blind and can barely walk, yet when you put a guitar in his hands he lights it up. Even Derek smiled.
