Utah is a cultural experience. 3.2 beer, liquor stores that are few and far between, every store except national chains closed on Sunday, rude arrogant locals on the high traverse or at Devil's Castle and parking lots in town that are known hot spots for car burglars. _________________ You know it's a good day when you wake up in the morning. |

I don't know much about destination skiing and have never been to Alta. It seems to me that one of the major advantages of the resorts near SLC is that they are near a big metro area, meaning people can have jobs, lives etc and still go skiing there. If you are flying a long way to go skiing, this isn't so much of an advantage for you, it might be a disadvantage. Unless you get a significant reduction in cost (cheaper flights, hotels, transportation).
IOW, if you are traveling a long way already, maybe it's good to go someplace that is a bit out of the way and requires travel. |

Alta doesn't have snowboarders. That alone makes it worth it. _________________ Creeds and doctrines are like a raft to get you to the other shore and then to relinquish. Neither cling to the raft or reject it when drowning. Even better, become a strong swimmer.

For someone from Slovakia, going to the Alps is like going to Hawaii.
The lady that cleans my house went to Hawaii. |

| I ski several times a year in Austria or Italy, of course most of time in Slovakian Tatras or Fatras mountain, some of them with nice freeride arenas. In 1992 I have been skiing 7 days in Beever Creek. My brother lives in Vancouver, therefore I was also considering to ski in Whistler or some other British Columbia ski resort, but Whistler lift ticket prices are a little bit shocking for me comparing it with Austrian Alps and not even mentioning our slovakian ski centres. Sure, each time I go to ski abroad, except of skiing, there is a part of cultural experience involved. |

In North America most of the resorts offer steep discounts on lift tickets if you purchase in advance. I'll bet there are some folks here that could advise you on this (Whitehonky to the courtest phone, Whitehonky).
As for Alta, lots of history there, it's one of the oldest resorts in this part of the world. Catch it when it's happening and you'll have a day you'll never forget. |

| North American lift ticket prices will generally be a shock, yes. If you've a brother in Vancouver all the more reason to head to inland BC.[/list] |

Martinkse hole,
Chopok sever,
Chopok juh,
High Tatra,
koffola,
pivo
parne buchty (sorry about the spelling).
Really, no reason to even go to Austria..... or Alta, but I can understand the desire to ski long , steep runs in fluffy light powder......

I guess ghostofcarl doesn't like Mammoth as much as carl once did:

It's fun and fast? Having skiied great, cold, deep powder at Mammoth more than once I'd say once again a utard is pulling a nurse ben, but that'd be redundant.

I live driving distance from Alta. It's great.
If I lived in Europe, there's no way I would do a destination trip here.
Alagna, La Grave, Engelberg, Andermatt, St Anton, Verbier, etc - seems like local options there are "tolerable" to me _________________ I believe it was Gandhi who said: "You must be the turn that you wish to see in the snow" |
