To the OP:
I understand some kids aren't ready to head to college immediately following H.S. and think it's a waste to send them off to incur tuition costs if it's not going to pay off.
However, I agree with those that say that if he's not going to school full time he needs to learn the downside of what 'real life' costs. He wants to stick around for the girlfriend, fine. Assuming he's staying at home, he should pay some room and board to you, cover his costs for transportation, etc. He needs to mature and this will help. He won't mature under mom and dad's wing.
Additionally, you should require that he attend some transferable courses at CCV (Bennington, Rutland, Springfield, and Bratt all have campuses). Forcing him to stay focused on school is important, even if it's local.
I don't agree that working at a liftee, waiter, etc. are beneficial at this point (take a year AFTER college to be a ski/bike bum when your options are less limited). It won't provide any additional factors that will help him mature and will more likely entrench him in a 'high school' mindset.
Best of luck. Raising kids ain't easy!
You know Grant your suggestion is not all that bad but it seems like it is just idling and not accomplishing much.
Honestly a 4 year stent in the military for a kid that may not have much direction to go could be a real good option. Have him take the ASVAB and his interest/knowledge in math/science should come out to allow him to sign for a good job with the military. Make sure he has a guaranteed "A" school with a good and interesting job. Something like "Nuke" school in the Navy would be hard to beat. The military has been getting a bad rap since the 10 years+ wars with the Arabs, but the Air Force and even more so the Navy guys hardly ever get shot at. 4 years starting at 18 gets you out and in college (tuition paid via some kind of GI bill) at age 22. It may be the time it takes to figure out a good direction to take an education and career. _________________ Il n'y a que moi qui a toujours raison.

You seem to have forgotten about the anchor...I mean girlfriend...chemman. He's not looking to leave home, which I think the military will require him to do. _________________ Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for.

For what it's worth:
I took a year off after HS. Had to pay every nickel of my way. Had two very significant local volunteer jobs, one of which was partly a passion of mine (i.e., didn't feel like work), had a job at a local deli (i.e., I didn't need to make much to get by), and also had a 2nd modest paying job coaching something I love.
Then I took the final summer before college to blow off some "steam."
It was just what I needed and a lot of years later I've been thankful for the otherwise unfortunate circumstances that forced me into that year off.
Oh yeah - I then went to a liberal/conservative elite school (for which I'm still paying).
Hard lessons learned are lasting lessons. I was already a pretty independent kid, but that year helped a lot for learning to make ends meet and knowing when to make sacrifices.
There are a number of big firms looking for engineers in the US that cannot find enough employees.
Not this crock of shit again. they want more H1Bs because they'll work longer hours for less money with little chance to leave. they don't want people making $90k and taking 15 weeks of vacation.
goc nailed it
not that you can't find the right technical job that pays and is flexible - but they usually are jobs that you bill at a high rate and get your work done. used to have one of those and skied more than the average cube jockey; but not as much as many of the folks on this board

He does want to be away from home.
He doesn't want to be far from his girlfriend.
He has no car.
1 ski season without money may help him a lot.
I see a kid who is scared of the dedication that it takes to study in college, scared of spending the amounts of money it takes to go to college and possibly having a not so good paying job when he gets out then becoming an overweight balding person stuck in an office.
Who can blame him.
I think he may just need to take a breather.
We helped him pick a school with enough choices to change his mind instead of being stuck where that isn't easy to do.
I also see him changing his mind on his major. Fine with me.
I was young when I went and it cost a year or so of college at least because of that. Who knows if a gap year would have helped or not.
Grades like a C, E and a W were not very pretty letters to get.
Luckily college was quite a bit cheaper then.
Grant, There was this one on page 2.
And girlfriends come and go if they stay they usually become a wife.
and for that there is no better test than this:
Quote:
Stand, Navy, out to sea, Fight our battle cry;
We'll never change our course, So vicious foe steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll out the TNT, Anchors Aweigh. Sail on to victory
And sink their bones to Davy Jones, hooray!
Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh.
Farewell to college joys, we sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay.
Through our last night on shore, drink to the foam,
Until we meet once more. Here's wishing you a happy voyage home.

I take it she is younger?
Community college for a 'bridge year' near home for some generals until she dumps him?
Or some good local 'factory work' (if it exists) to open his eyes to his baby daddy future possibilities.
from page 2, took you guys until page 6 to get back to what is most important to the kid which is not engineering degrees blah, blah, blah
gear tech heads in ski towns are alot like engineering tech heads on ski forums....
first they think about isn't what the biological realities are for young men (and some 'older' men but apparently not all) _________________

nah... sugarloaf.... he would gladly go off to college if he wanted those 3, (S,D & R&R). He wants 'one' and will gladly forgo all else to be close to that 'regular' one.... guess that might povide it's own valuable lesson that is best learned sooner than later. _________________

Exactly. FWIW I know as many lawyers or non-technical consultants who've achieved this as "tech" persons. It's a fair bit of work staying on top and keeping those skills valuable..... moreso now than ever before.
Regarding Caterpillar - they laid off 20,000 people less than 3 years ago. Their CEO can go copulate himself. Yeah, nobody wants to work for you, or your specialty, when you pump and dump. Similar to Boeing who dumped huge amounts of talent post-9/11 and now finds that nobody is skilled or wants to work for them. Duh. Nice talent market, no loyalty mean you the worker are up shit creek when business goes bad and in both their cases they aren't willing to pay premiums when business is good.
