Do you really think publicizing this is a good idea? .... show a little restraint.
You know, that issue just didn't occur to me. (The "official" versus "practice" issue isn't really my main concern.)
I'd be more interested in just gathering info on resorts that officially allow uphill traffic either during, or outside of, operating hours.
What I know now is:
Waterville (when lifts aren't operating)
Wildcat (when lifts ARE operating, need "adventure" pass, and only on certain trails)
Wachusett (when lifts aren't operating)
Magic Mountain (anytime, suggested trails to follow)
[And others who allow it non-officially in a quiet way....]
Actually, Waterville's official policy is that uphill traffic is only allowed when the lifts ARE operating. Plus you need to have a pass.
Here's an article in the Stowe Reporter from Jan 2011, that reports on the official policies from Stowe, Smuggs, and Jay. You should read the whole thing, there are many good points, clarifications, and quotes. Too many to repost here.
Also here is the Mad River Glen Winter 2012 Newsletter which outlines their Straight Dope on Skinning on Page 4.
Also, the photo accompanying that article features former ttips poster BushDR, who used to be an awesome source of stoke and info here, too bad he left....I can't imagine why
Jon44, that's all I've got for you, other than to say Sugarbush does NOT like skinners, any time, any where, but I do not have a link to an official policy anywhere.

I could see other resorts who had always been willing to turn a blind eye, deciding they no longer could do that because of this idea.
Just because you have a machine in front of you that's connected to every other machine in the world doesn't mean you have to always use it. You're talking about skinning in a closed ski area for crying out loud; show a little restraint.

True If you ski the catamount trail and venture off of it onto any of Winns Playground the law will be called and you will be charged with theft of services.

trying to find the article about a SB patroller calling the cops on Dave Goodman for skinning to SB from MRG....can't find it, but it's pretty awesome, in the terrible sort of way.
Thanks. All the articles were interesting. In an ideal world, all the resorts would come together and develop some sort of widely accepted policy that works for everyone. I could imagine something between Magic Mountain's and Wildcat's could work (so ski area profits a bit from skinners, while minimizing liability and hassle issues.)

I skinned up Wildcat yesterday, and my sense was that since it's officially sanctioned (and I paid for a special "adventure" pass), the whole vibe was a lot friendlier than when I've done it at areas where there's not a clear policy.
(Even skiers coming down were less put off by my presence there---I only got one "you're going the wrong way," and it was from an old-timer who said it in a triple-ironic "we-both-know-that's-what-people-usually-yell-at-you" sort of way.)

That's odd--I wonder if that's changed. About two years ago, I got this reply from someone there:
"We prefer if you are interested in doing it that you do it early, before we open for the day, or right as the lifts are opening. That is for your safety as much as anything."

I'm not an authority about much of anything but I'm absolutely sure of this. I'm part of a small group that has been skinning up WV for years. We head up Sunday mornings before opening to catch breakfast at the Schwendi Hut. This year, perhaps because of increased publicity about uphill travel, the "only when the lifts are operating" policy was strictly enforced. Here's the rationale....they don't want anyone getting hit by a cat or a cable when grooming is in progress but they want spectators to be able to get to venues to watch races and freestyle events, which may be up on True Grit.

hmmmmmmm.
I'll just never understand the need of some people to post photographs and trip reports about skinning a resort. I skin resorts too but:
It's not that interesting; and
I'm not that interesting.
This is a broader topic but, what the hell, why do a lot of you people feel the need to post and write about the mundane details of your lives? You skin a resort- Trip Report! You go for a backcountry ski - Trip Report! You go for a bike ride - Trip Report! I'm not talking about the truly noteworthy adventures, to remote, even exotic locales- TRs and photos are certainly justified in those cases (although I'm still, personally, unlikely to read them). I'm talkin' about the folks that post pictures and/or descriptions just about every time they step outside. What the hell is that?

Mundane destinations or not, I enjoy the TR's from places I might head to, either someday or the immediate future, the latter for the currrent beta. Pretty simple really.
