My wife's took a dip in a dog bowl... dove out of a pocket.

She immediately turned it off and it sat in a bowl of rice for three days. It was fine. Which was good, because it was about a week old.

x2 on the rice. We've used it for all kinds of devices that have gone in the drink. Phones, WII-motes, tv remotes... its all taken a dip and its all been recovered.

Common theme in that thread you posted: phone in one pocket, other crap in another. Sounds frighteningly more simple than it actually is, doesn't it?
Well, you'd be surprised.... Embarassed The AT&T pre-cut stick on protectors are cheap enough that it is not a question of why but rather one of why not.

My wife had a protector on her iPhone 4 for a year, and I never used one. After a year she took it off to put a new one on, and played around for a few minutes. She never put a new one on.

We use our phones like extensions of our hands...user experience is ultimate. Those protectors are worse than condoms.
That's cool. YMMV

Just got my drisuit case ($60). Will keep y'all posted. So far so good.

An instant plus is that the outer case isn't rubber like it is on my OtterBox, so sliding it in and out of jeans and other tightish pockets is not a PITA anymore.

For now, some photos of a year and a half old OtterBox in need of replacement and what it's done to my phone. I think it's definitely served its purpose and like anything else I own, has a limited life. I might not use it all of the time when I'm outdoors, but my phone goes everywhere with me, always in a pocket and never with keys.

The 'box kept scratches off the screen and did really well to protect the phone from impacts. That said, it wasn't perfect, (I do not expect there to be a perfect offering out there, by the way) given how I roughly treat/toss around electronics, I'd say it did pretty well. (I don't get pissed and throw stuff, it's more like throwing hard objects around in a pack)

My biggest complaints are the fact that the built in screen protector got scratched up merely by my fingernails and makes the phone irritating to read in full sun and that the plastic inner layer scratched up the metal antenna band around the phone. All aesthetic things, but if scratches happen, I would expect them to come from things other than a $50 case i.e. me dropping it when I've taken it out to clean it, which I had to do every few weeks or so as grit would collect in there and make tiny marks on the bottom of the handset. OtterBox has switched to a more rugged rubber since I got my case, but I've fondled a new one and the fit isn't nearly as good, but like everything else, it's a reasonable compromise.

Pix.

Another vote for the Seal Line. I put my old phone case (to mimic having the phone in it) in, sealed it, and let it float in water - no visible leakage. The phone is somewhat useable without removing it. I'd guess a ziplock, replaced now and then, would work as well.

I recently read that 3,000,000 phones a year get dropped in the toilet.

Two good options:
Both meet the IPX 7 standard, which is submerged for 1/2 an hour in a meter of water.

www.outdoortech.com look for I-Phone 4 case.

or

www.outdoorresearch.com and look for the Sensor dry pocket.

One is a soft case the other a hard case.

Have worked great for me, I use the hard case for paddling and the soft case for skiing or rain days on the trail.

Cheers!

My complaint w/ Otterbox is that moisture builds up under the screen protector when i put it in my jacket while skiing. That makes it freakin useless. My OB is on a Motorola Atrix.

Got the same problem, though it only showed up in the last two months out of the year that I've had the thing.

I have found that this is easily remedied with a small piece of plastic grocery bag material wrapped around the otterbox. This keeps the moisture outside the bag material. Cheap, effective, and uber classy.

defgeats the whole purpose of the OB. I took off the OB and use a snack sized ziplock now when skiing As previously mentiuoned in this thread I also use a stick on screen protector. Takes care of two of my three needs. impact protection, not so much. However, I found that due to size, the phone would jump out of my hand more often than not WITH the OB, so remove the OB, remove the problem.

Well maybe my fortune is calling, with customized grocery bag wraps at very reasonable prices. Plus, if you act now I will throw in a free coffee can/wax/string backup phone. This great addition normally retails for over $20 but is yours free if you act now. Laughing
