Kinda of a no duh article but I guess to people outside the ski world it may be "news". AT is easier, of course it'll get more followers. Same reason snowboarding appeals to so many young people picking up snow sports.

I like the comment of Tele being a resort sport. I guess the margin on AT gear is higher.....

Mt. Hood is one big uphill/downhill sidecountry, so it's no wonder a big AT scene.

Out in these yonder parts, you'll see mostly XC (nordic bc) and snowshoes.

I heard of that idea: tele for resort, alpine for bc, but I mostly do just the opposite. Which I guess is not as rad?

Snowboarding is declining, too. As measured by gear purchases.

Oh wow! This has never been
talked about around here..Laughing

"The reason for the burgeoning interest in AT, according to
Shelley Hakanson, owner of WY'East Nordic school, is that alpine touring is more stable, more consistent and more powerful.

AT's benefits
Avalanche clinic instructor Shane Fox of Three Sisters Backcountry stresses that the releasable bindings on AT skis are an important safety consideration in avalanche country. Releasable telemark bindings never advanced to the point that they became popular.

Plus, for someone who already knows how to downhill ski in resorts, AT is much easier to learn. "Telemarking takes time to master the fluidity of the drop-knee turn," Hakanson said."[/b]

great

more alpinists in the back country

again proves the old adage

Randonee is French for 'can't telemark'

I'll give up my tele skis when they pry them from my cold, dead feet

Alpinists in the backcountry? This must be stopped, climbing mountains should not be allowed!! Wink

Wow, hope that does not fortell death in an avalanche with non-releasable bindings.

Personally, happy with my choices and not insecure with others'.

If it matters to Oregonians, it is in the Washington Post.

Yawn. An east coaster no doubt.
