He might be thinking of C-1 which is when a WW canoeist outfits a kayak so that he/she can kneel in it and paddle a single blade paddle. Bob's boat is a regular kayak. One designed for steep creeks.

Another reason to love snow! Wish we had more of a snow pack to provide a good melt off. Oh well, we'll take what we can get! Sure has been nice weather for boatin!

Thanks!

Baxter State Park just closed its southern/western trails.
See the BSP Trails Blog for more info. I was on Abol Slide two weeks ago and there was ~18 inches of snow and apparently just about all of it is gone now.

They've offered refunds for Chimney Pond-bound climbers and skiers. Be sure to call the Park if you were planning on heading there.

Runaway winter - bad. Bike season - good.

My buddy was in the high peaks all last week and said that the only skiing was on Marcy but it was going fast - like everywhere else. Call the Mountaineer.

Read a Cardigan TR on T4T from Saturday with skiable conditions on Alexandria, so I thought I'd go have a look-see on Monday. The season wouldn't be complete without snow hopping on my favorite little mountain.

I've seen the Holt looking worse:

Sad skis looking at dying snow:

Bottom of Alexandria--trail at the top was bare:

At this point I didn't even bother--and felt rather silly for even trying--what a difference 2 days made! I turned around and clomped back to the parking lot--icy trail with rocks sticking out meant I kept my skins on.

Ate lunch at the car and decided to take a walk--just had my Keen sandals, so I got wet feet.

Dukes was completely gone, but I enjoyed some nice scenery:

FULL bucket:

Old rope tow:

A favorite playground:

Farewell winter!

Very pretty Brenda, in a bittersweet kinda way.

Third or fourth day of record warmth here in Montpelier, it's gotta be pushing 80.

Looking more and more like Reggae Fest at Sugarloaf this year will be a dry-land event.

Dang... those shots of the pasture just kill me Brenda.

MrT nailed it with his finger comment.

And to that, I say....

... Get out the bikes. Soon it will look like this out. Yesterday, I rode in shorts. In March!!!

I thought the Mansfield snow stake chart was going to look like someone giving the finger, but now it's starting to look like New Hampshire. Of course I guess that's a big FU to Vermont too!

The thing is, I've skied the trails with the pasture looking like that before--sun gets it early while the trails can stay snow-covered. Not this year.

Bittersweet indeed Dirk. Glad to see you are harvesting what you can. Hoping to get to Tux this weekend, but my touchy back may have other ideas. Rolling Eyes

Weekend of the 10/11 we turned back at the 50 meter Bridge above Marcy Dam. Boulders, rocks, ice and about 50 people ahead of us on snow shoes, crampons, bare boots etc had worn what snow was left to dirt. Didn't look much better higher so we cut our loses. The next day we went over to McKenzie Mtn, on the west shore of Lake Placid. Plenty of snow, more than I've seen all year anywhere. Trail to summit was very steep and we had to negotiate some serious ice flows. Crossed the ridge to the summit and beyond to descend a SOA trail east to the lake shore. We lost the trail in the massive Irene blowdowns, but made it down a drainage none the less. Now, two weeks later, it's probably all leaves and dirt. Marcy's summit snow fields may not be worth the walk/schlog necessary to get to them from South Meadows.

Mt Snow website said Sunday 3-25th is the closing date this year. Reggae fest this weekend - Sat and Sun.
I usually ski and miss the reggae this year I may be near the bands.

Any other official closing dates up north?

This was March 6, a scant two weeks ago. Hard to believe.
